Farber wins boys singles gold medal at PABCON Youth
July 08, 2013
Junior Team USA's Matt Farber of Plainview, N.Y., won the boys singles gold medal Sunday to kick off the 2013 Pan American Bowling Confederation Youth Championships in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Farber, a first-time member of Junior Team USA, fired a six-game total of 1,391 (231.8 average) to take the gold at Bolera Caribe. Mexico's Andre Fors and Peru's Kenny Kishimoto tied for the silver medal with 1,356.
The other Junior Team USA boys narrowly missed out on winning medals with Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn., finishing fourth with 1,355, Wesley Low of Palmdale, Fla., taking fifth with 1,354 and Greg Young of Viera, Fla., finishing sixth with 1,340.
"It's a really great feeling knowing that all the hard work I put in over the years has paid off," said Farber, who had games of 246, 187, 234, 256, 241 and 227. "My teammates were pretty close to the top and we were hoping to take all three medals but it didn't quite work out. But I think this is an unbelievable start for us to the week, especially since we have such a young team."
In the girls singles, Puerto Rico's Kristie Lopez took the gold medal with 1,262, Colombia's Juliana Franco won the silver with 1,258 and Mexico's Sara Pelayo took the bronze with 1,251.
Sarah Lokker of New Baltimore, Mich., was the high finisher for Junior Team USA, taking fifth place with 1,238. Natalie Goodman of O'Fallon, Ill., was 10th with 1,177, Robyn Renslow of Brentwood, Calif., finished 13th with 1,159 and Mary Wells of Westerville, Ohio, was 16th with 1,149.
The PABCON Youth Championships continue today with the doubles event. The Junior Team USA pairings will be Farber/Low, Doyle/Young, Renslow/Goodman and Lokker/Wells. Trios will be held Tuesday followed by team event on Wednesday and Thursday. The championships conclude with the Masters competition on Friday.
