Eight teams go undefeated on Day 1 of competition at 2024 Intercollegiate Team Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 2024 Intercollegiate Team Championships got underway Thursday at Kingpin Lanes in the Greater Louisville area, and eight teams, including the defending men’s ITC champions and the 2024 NCAA women’s titlists, went undefeated to put themselves in ideal position to make a run at this year’s titles.
The ITC is the culminating event of the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season and features the top 16 men’s and top 16 women’s bowling programs from across the country.
All teams bowled 24 Baker games Thursday to determine seeding for the double-elimination bracket, which features best-of-seven Baker matches leading into the finals.
The finals, which will be taped Saturday, will air on CBS Sports Network on Tuesdays in May. The women’s ITC show is scheduled to air on May 7 with the men’s ITC final slated to follow on May 14.
Leading the men’s division in qualifying was Webber International with a 5,229 total, a 217.88 average. The Warriors were joined in the top five by Lawrence Tech (5,047), Indiana Tech (5,026), defending champion Wichita State (4,993) and Mount Mercy (4,968).
However, of those five, only Wichita State and Lawrence Tech were able to go 2-0 and end Day 1 among the ranks of the undefeated.
Wichita State earned that mark with relative ease, taking down St. Ambrose 4-0 in Round 1 and Mount Mercy 4-1 during Round 2 to remain unbeaten and keep its bid for back-to-back ITC titles firmly on track.
Lawrence Tech had to work a bit harder, but the result was the same as it also got to 2-0 on the day thanks to a 4-0 win over McKendree and a 4-2 defeat of Marian-Indiana.
While the capacity crowd at Kingpin Lanes probably wasn’t surprised to see the men’s top two seeds advance to Round 3 undefeated, they may not have predicted who their opponents would be.
That’s because the other two teams to get through Thursday’s first two rounds of matches unscathed were squads that qualified outside the top 10 in the 16-team men’s field.
The No. 11 seed, Wisconsin-Whitewater earned a Round 3 matchup with Lawrence Tech after it took down Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah by a score of 4-2 and Indiana Tech 4-1.
On the other side of the men’s bracket, No. 16 Muskingum dispatched top qualifier Webber International 4-0 before coming out on top of a back-and-forth battle with Calumet to win 4.5-2.5 and earn a Friday afternoon battle with Wichita State.
In women’s action, the qualifying field was paced by Mount Mercy (5,032), Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah (5,018), Wichita State (5,012), 2024 NCAA national champion Jacksonville State (5,008) and Louisiana Tech (4,929).
Unlike the men’s side where the seeds pretty much went out the window once match play began, they held strong and true on the women’s side as each of the top four qualifiers went 2-0 on Thursday.
Mount Mercy reached that mark by beating St. Francis-Illinois 4-2 in Round 1 before closing the night with a 4-1 win over Pikeville.
SCAD-Savannah was pushed a bit tougher, but the Bees rose to the occasion, topping Webber International 4-2 and North Carolina A&T 4-3 to remain in the Winners Bracket.
Jacksonville State, which is less than a week removed from its victory at the NCAA’s 2024 National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship, was businesslike en route to a 2-0 mark on Thursday, besting Saint Xavier 4-1 during Round 1 and Louisiana Tech 4-2 in Round 2 to keep its possibility of claiming a second 2024 national title very much alive.
The women from Wichita State, meanwhile, collected wins over Duquesne (4-2) and Sacred Heart (4-0) to keep themselves in the thick of the women’s national title conversation as well.
That conversation will be greatly impacted by the outcome of Friday’s next round of Winners Bracket matches, which will pit Mount Mercy against Jacksonville State and SCAD-Savannah versus Wichita State.
Fans will have to wait a little while for those matchups, however, as Elimination Bracket matches will kick off competition at Kingpin Lanes on Friday. The opening round is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m. Eastern with a second round of win-or-go-home bouts following at 9:45 a.m. Eastern. Winners Bracket matches will resume at 1 p.m. Eastern.
Match play will continue Friday until the teams for Saturday’s title matches are determined.
Teams earned their way into the ITC field in March by finishing in the top four at one of four sectional events held throughout the country.
