ARLINGTON, Texas - Defending champion and Hall of Famer Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla., retained the lead and made tournament history as qualifying concluded at the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens presented by Storm on Sunday.
Duggan wrapped up qualifying at the International Training and Research Center with games of 257, 269, 195, 236 and 237 for a five-game block of 1,194 to finish with the highest 15-game qualifying score in tournament history with 3,505 (233.67 average). 2010 USBC Senior Queens champion Char Hammel of Las Vegas set the record with 3,460 at the 2012 event, also held at the ITRC.
"I was trying to stay relaxed and just make the best shot I could every time," said Duggan, a 15-time Professional Women's Bowlers Association titlist. "For tomorrow, I just want to stay focused and try not to beat myself. I can't control what my opponent does, but I have to control what I do and hopefully pick the right ball, make good shots and keep it going."
Fellow Hall of Famer Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo., sits in second overall with 3,454, while 2011 Senior Queens champion Paula Vidad of Sun City, Calif., moved into third with 3,422.
Carole Jones of Englewood, Colo., earned the final spot into the double-elimination match-play bracket by qualifying 16th with a 2,958 total (197.2 average). Competition will resume Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern.
At the conclusion of competition Monday, four bowlers will advance to Tuesday's stepladder finals, which will be broadcast live on BowlTV starting at 6:30 p.m. Eastern. BowlTV is providing live coverage of each round of the 2013 Senior Queens.
SANDELIN CAPTURES TRIPLE CROWN SHOOT-OUT TITLE
USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., outlasted Kristy Whitcher of Belfair, Wash., 237-203, to capture the title at the 2013 Triple Crown Shoot-Out presented by The Orleans on Sunday evening at the ITRC.
Sandelin, the 2007 Senior Queens champion, eliminated Carol Teel of The Villages, Fla., 221-201, and Vidad, 246-190, before defeating Whitcher in the finals for the $1,000 top prize. Whitcher received $750 for second place.
"I tried to keep my mind quiet and let my body do the work," Sandelin said. "Today was just about making good shots and keeping the ball in front of me. I was second in the Triple Crown last year, second at the Senior U.S. Women's Open, twice, so it feels good to get a win under my belt."
The Triple Crown Shoot-Out brought together the top 10 bowlers from the National Golden Ladies Classic, Senior U.S. Women's Open and Senior Queens into a single-elimination bracket based on their qualifying scores from each of the three events.
