March 21, 2011
The application deadlines for the Dexter High School All-American Team, Gift of Life Scholarship, the USBC Annual Zeb Scholarship, and to apply for a spot in the United States Olympic Committee's F.L.A.M.E. (Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere) program, are nearing. A look at the scholarships:
Dexter/USBC High School All-American Team
Each year, five male and five female USBC High School members are selected for the Dexter/USBC High School All-American Team. Each person selected receives a $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must be nominated by their coach or team administrator; student-athletes and/or family members may not handle nominations. Once nominations are accepted, the student-athlete receives an application packet.
Selection to the Dexter/USBC High School All-American Team is based on bowling accomplishments, academic achievement, letters of recommendation, extracurricular and community involvement, submitted essays and resumes. Minimum requirements include a 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale or equivalent) and at least one letter of recommendation. Nomination forms must be postmarked by March 25. Up to 12 USBC Youth members will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship managed through USBC's SMART program. In honor of the September 11 heroes, two of these awards, one to a male and one to a female, are reserved for a son and a daughter of fire, police or emergency rescue personnel. The deadline to apply is April 1 and you can click here for an application.
Annual Zeb Scholarship
Named after Jim Zebehazy, the last executive director of the Young American Bowling Alliance, the Annual Zeb Scholarship is awarded to a USBC Youth member who achieves academic success and gives back to their community through service. Applicants must be a high school junior or senior and a USBC Youth member in good standing. The winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and an expenses-paid trip for themselves and a parent or guardian to attend the awards ceremony held in conjunction with the USBC Junior Gold Championships in July.
