EAGAN, Minn. - Bryanna Coté of Red Rock, Arizona, paced the field after the first round of qualifying Friday at the Professional Women's Bowling Association Twin Cities Open.
Coté, a 33-year-old right-hander, delivered a consistent performance at Cedarvale Lanes on the way to the lead, rolling games of 214, 225, 213, 198, 237, 259, 200 and 233 for an eight-game total of 1,779, a 222.38 average.
Coté, the 2016 PWBA Lexington Open champion, credited a late addition to her bowling ball arsenal after Thursday's official practice session in helping her read this week's 43-foot oil pattern the right way during the first round. She used the same ball throughout the eight-game block.
Coté finished in 18th place at last week's Nationwide PWBA Greater Cleveland Open, the opening event of the 2019 PWBA Tour season.
Singapore's Cherie Tan, who was the runner-up last week at Yorktown Lanes, rolled 278 in her final game to move into second place with 1,740. Ukraine's Dasha Kovalova is third with 1,732, England's Verity Crawley is fourth with 1,724 and Lindsay Boomershine of Perry, Utah, is fifth with 1,721.
All competitors at the PWBA Twin Cities Open will return to Cedarvale Lanes on Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern for the final eight-game round of qualifying. After 16 games, the top 32 players will advance to the next round, which will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. Eastern.
Going into the final qualifying round, Aruba's Thashaina Seraus holds the 32nd spot with a 1,609 total, a 201.13 average.
Bowlers advancing to Saturday's Round of 32 will bowl an additional eight games to determine which 12 players make the next round. The Round of 12 will consist of six additional games, with total pinfall for 30 games determining the four players advancing to the stepladder finals.
The stepladder finals will take place Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern and be broadcast live on BowlTV.com. BowlTV is providing wire-to-wire coverage of the PWBA Twin Cities Open.
