Colorado team surges to Diamond lead at 2019 USBC Women's Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - The members of Powerhouse of Lakewood, Colorado, cruised to the top of the Diamond Team standings after averaging more than 230 as a group Thursday at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.
Led by Sharon Powers' 785 series, Powerhouse rolled games of 881, 943 and 943 to finish with a 2,767 total at Northrock Lanes, the second-highest team score since the event transitioned to four-player teams during the 2014 event.
Powers was joined Thursday by two-time USBC Women's Championships titlist Christine Gill (736 series), Michelle Maly (654) and Debbie McMullen (592).
Defending Diamond Team champion Golden Approach Pro Shop of Dayton, Ohio, previously led with 2,682.
Bowlieve In A Cure of Arlington, Texas, set the four-player team mark at the 2014 event in Reno, Nevada, with a 2,819 total on the way to the Diamond Team title.
Powers, who made her 44th consecutive tournament appearance Thursday, rolled games of 243, 287 and 255 on her way to pacing the team from the leadoff position. She credited her success to keeping things simple.
"I tried to stay calm and not think about too much," said Powers, who finished in third place at the 2018 USBC Senior Queens. "Winning a title at this event always has been a goal of mine, and it feels great to be in position to do so with these ladies. We always have an incredibly fun time here."
Gill claimed the Diamond Singles (816 handicap series) and Diamond All-Events (2,324 handicap total) titles at the 2013 Women's Championships, which also was held in Reno. The tournament featured handicap divisions from 2010-2013 before returning to an all-scratch format in 2014.
She was confident that this group would be able to get the job done, and the team showed its poise during the final game by filling every frame to finish its run to the lead.
Gill also now finds herself in position to getting closer to a personal goal at the storied event.
"I knew we had a good team and could accomplish this," Gill said. "I've looked up to these women for years, and I'm so happy we were able to take the lead. It was incredible for us to go 40 clean in the final game.
"Personally, my goal is to win a team and doubles title, so I can win them all!"
The group will look to continue its run Friday at Northrock Lanes and return for doubles and singles at 11 a.m. Eastern.
Diamond Team includes bowlers with combined entering averages of 725 and above.
