Colorado bowlers lead Sapphire Team at 2024 USBC Women’s Championships
June 05, 2024
RENO, Nev. – It was an exciting day for the team of Prairie Pals II of Bennett, Colorado, on Tuesday at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships as they secured the lead in the Sapphire Division.
The bowlers for Prairie Pals II featured Cheryl Campbell, Sophie Fernandez, Robin Russell and Stephanie Wilson. The Colorado bowlers had games of 667, 629 and 595 for a series total of 1,891 to take the lead.
The teammates moved ahead of the previous leading total of 1,857 posted by Hot Pockets on May 30.
Bowling their hearts out, the teammates worked together to put up high scores. Leading the team was Russell with a 532 series. Fernandez had a series of 476, Wilson had 445 and Campbell finished with 438.
When asked about the reaction to the news, Fernandez said, “I feel pretty good overall. It was a cool experience, especially because we didn’t even realize that.”
Coming to nationals and bowling well can be an exciting experience. It’s a different playing field for many and the competition gets tough. Being newer to the USBC Women’s Championships, you don’t always know what to expect to score, seeing that it is different from back home.
“We bowled really well, seeing that I’ve only been to nationals three times, and for the rest of my team, it’s their first time,” Fernandez said. “There’s always your first-time jitters, getting out there and just bowling and being OK.”
While they all bowl back home, the combination of the team Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium is new to all of them. They had to figure out how to work together, which helped them to the top of the standings.
“I’ve bowled with the Prairie Pals group back home, but the team today is new,” Fernandez said.
The group will go into doubles and singles Wednesday and is ready for another big day. Doing well in the team event gives them motivation.
“I feel pretty good,” Fernandez said. “We’re going to have a good dinner and get good sleep for tomorrow. I think just to bowl our hearts out, because the outcome is a lot easier that way. I hope we bowl well tomorrow.”
Sapphire Team features four-player groups with combined entering averages of 540 and below.
