Colorado bowler connects for 300 at 2024 USBC Women’s Championships

RENO, Nev. – Kelly Zapf zapped the pins Friday at the National Bowling Stadium, rolling the sixth 300 game so far this year at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships.
Zapf, of Lakewood, Colorado, bowled her perfect game during her second game of doubles, and her overall series was 696.
In Game 1, she rolled a 200, and in her final game, she tossed a score of 196.
Zapf was jubilant and overwhelmed with excitement after she had finished with a perfect score.
“I’m still really excited,” said Zapf, who made her second appearance at the USBC Women’s Championships. “I mean, it’s hard to fully describe right now. I’m going to get on the plane later and hopefully everything will be settled by then.”
The left-hander has been bowling since she was 7 years old.
“So, we’re going on over three decades now of bowling,” Zapf said. “I bowled at the University of Kansas in college in the early 2000s. I bowled on and off until when I moved to Colorado, where the scene out there was very motivating and very competitive.”
Zapf liked that her teammates, family and friends were there to support her during her 300 game.
“Being surrounded by all this talent is amazing, and everyone has really good attitudes,” Zapf said.
She looked cool, calm and collected throughout her perfect game.
“I mean it goes a long way, and it helps me relax overall and play to the high level of competition throughout the tournament,” Zapf said. “I knew I had to bring my A game, and they definitely made it easier for me to bowl well.”
Zapf has really enjoyed her teammates and fellow Colorado bowlers throughout the last few years of her career on the lanes.
“It’s hard not to be influenced when everyone’s striking around you, and all these girls from Colorado are competitive,” Zapf said. “They’re fun to be around, and there’s no drama with us.”
The record for the most 300 games bowled in a single edition of the Women’s Championships is seven. That record happened last year in Las Vegas at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
Zapf added 726 in team and 693 in singles for an all-events total of 2,115. She now sits in eighth place in Diamond All-Events.
