The 2023-2024 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season kicked off last weekend at the Welcome Back Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, with the Midway women and Muskingum men claiming the top spots.
The event featured five varsity teams in the women’s division and seven teams on the men’s side. The format featured nine traditional games across two days, and total pinfall determined the winner in each division.
On the women’s side, Midway started strong Saturday by averaging more than 207 as a team through its first five games to build a 109-pin lead over University of the Cumberlands.
As the field returned for its second block Sunday, University of the Cumberlands began to chip away at the deficit to pull within 40 pins of Midway heading into the final game. Both teams remained in contention for the victory, but Midway was able to hold on to record the win by 18 pins with an 8,787 total.
University of the Cumberlands finished with 8,769, and Muskingum was third with 8,509.
Kiara Abanto of University of the Cumberlands was the top individual performer in the women’s division, rolling three games over 220, including a 265 in Game 3, on the way to a nine-game total of 1,895 (210.55 average).
Muskingum’s Kaylee Hauck was second with 1,847 and was followed by Midway’s Maegan Coleman (1,832) and Muskingum’s Tayler Clark (1,809). University of the Cumberlands’ Paige Frantz finished fifth with 1,778.
In the men’s field, Muskingum held a 29-pin lead over Midway after Saturday’s five-game block as both teams averaged more than 215.
Muskingum increased its lead to 151 pins after Sunday’s opening game and continued to put up strikes to conclude the block, finishing with a 9,833 total to win by 327 pins and claim the title for the second consecutive year.
Midway finished as the runner-up with 9,506, and University of the Cumberlands took third with 9,114.
In the men’s individual standings, Charles Wilken of University of the Cumberlands averaged more than 235 across nine games, highlighted by a 279 in Game 8, to take the top spot with a 2,116 total.
Muskingum claimed three of the next four spots, as Jacob Willard (second with 2,076), Brody Wildenmann (fourth with 2,037) and Ethan McDonald (fifth with 2,002) each averaged more than 222. Rio Grande’s Daniel Gross finished third with 2,065.
A pair of events are on the schedule for the second week of the season. The Dirty Bird Classic will take place at Jax 60 in Jackson, Michigan, while the Warrior Open will be contested at Mockingbird Lanes in Omaha, Nebraska.
