Collegiate Ticker - Sept. 20, 2017

The 2017-2018 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season got underway last weekend with the Bethel men and Morehead State women winning titles at the Green River Classic in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

The Green River Classic was held at Phillips Lanes and featured 10 varsity men's teams and 11 varsity women's teams. The format consisted of five traditional games Saturday and 12 Baker games Sunday with total pinfall determining the winner in each division.

The Bethel men held a small lead after five traditional games, and the Wildcats increased its advantage during Baker competition on its way to a 6,718 pinfall total. Campbellsville finished second with 6,620, and Louisville was third with 6,556.

Campbellsville led the men's individual standings as McKinley Knopp (1,023 for five games) and Austin Montgomery (960) claimed the top two spots. University of the Cumberlands bowlers took the next three spots - Robert Castle (959), Alex Lewis (953) and Adam Thress (950). Union's Jerry Whobrey matched Thress' 950 total to tie for fifth place.

The Morehead State women made their move during Baker competition Sunday. The Eagles used a 233 finish to overcome a 38-pin difference against Union and take the title with a 6,293 total. Union finished second with 6,264, and University of the Cumberlands was third with 6,182.

Anna Etherington of Lindsey Wilson College cruised to the top of the women's individual standings, firing a 1,033 total for her five games, a 206.6 average. Union's Kendall Lane (931) and Julia Edenfield (912) finished second and third, respectively, while Morehead State's Amy Fortuna (909) and Courtney Chaffin (901) rounded out the top five.

In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:

- At the Racers Classic in Lima, Ohio, the Wright State women and Notre Dame-Ohio men each won as the top seed in the stepladder finals.
