Collegiate Ticker - Oct. 9, 2024
The first Tier I tournament of the 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season saw two programs take home their first Tier I victories when the dust settled last weekend in Wisconsin.
At the Midwest Collegiate Championships in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin (men), and Milwaukee (women), the Marian-Indiana men and Coe women claimed the titles after winning the match-play bracket.
The tournament saw 53 men’s varsity teams and 42 women’s varsity teams shoe up in the first big tournament of the season. All teams bowled five individual games and 16 Baker games before the top eight advanced to the best-of-three match-play bracket.
On the men’s side, Marian-Indiana qualified as the No. 3 seed for the bracket and faced No. 6 Indiana Tech in first round, defeating the Warriors, 2-1. They followed that up with a sweep of No. 2 St. Ambrose to face No. 5 Webber International in the championship match.
Marian-Indiana won Game 1, 226-225, before losing Game 2, 172-259. The title-deciding game saw Marian-Indiana win, 185-158, for the program’s first Tier I victory.
Individually, Webber International’s Austin Grammar led all men, including a 300 in Game 1, with a five-game total of 1,180. St. Ambrose’s Zach Greim (1,158) placed second, while Marian-Indiana’s Kyle Toyias and Lindenwood’s Luke Batchelor tied for third with 1,150. Mount Mercy’s Zach Andresen rounded out the top five with 1,148.
On the women’s side of the field, Coe qualified as the No. 3 seed and faced No. 6 Wisconsin-Whitewater to start match play. Coe defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2-1, advancing to face No. 2 Saint Xavier in the semifinals.
Saint Xavier was no match for the Kohawks, as Coe swept the Cougars to advance to the championship match and face off against No. 4 St. Ambrose. In another title match that went the distance, Coe prevailed for their first Tier I victory.
In the individual standings, Calumet’s Savanah Rodriguez led all women with a total of 1,123, while Viterbo’s Emily Newbauer was second with 1,085.
