The first Tier 1 event of the 2016-2017 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season is in the books as the Webber International men and Grand View women recorded victories last weekend at the 46th Annual Midwest Bowling Championships in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
The event's format featured six traditional games Saturday and 16 Baker games Sunday, with total pinfall determining the champion at AMF Bowlero. A total of 41 varsity men's teams and 29 varsity women's teams vied for a big win early in the season.
Midland and Webber distanced themselves from the rest of the men's field after Saturday's six-game block, but Webber shined Sunday in Baker competition, averaging more than 217 to make up a 149-pin deficit and collect the win with a 10,182 pinfall total. Midland finished second with 10,111, while Calumet averaged more than 228 in Baker competition to move into third with 10,022.
Brothers Zach and Alec Karr of Midland led the individual standings at AMF Bowlero, with Zach taking the top spot with a 1,441 six-game total (240.17 average), and Alec finishing second with 1,406. Webber's Giorgio Clinaz took third with 1,405, and St. Ambrose teammates Brent Boho (1,400) and Kyle Krol (1,390) rounded out the top five.
On the women's side, Grand View had four teams within 40 pins of its leading total after Saturday's six games but delivered the highest Baker total among the women's field Sunday to cruise to the win with an 8,943 effort. Webber finished second with 8,698, and St. Francis-Illinois moved into third with 8,674.
Along with the team win, Grand View's Rebecca Broerman also took top individual honors by pacing the field with a 1,300 total (216.67 average). Lindenwood's Shelly Goodwin (1,263) and Calumet's Porsche Chartrand (1,250) finished second and third, respectively. St. Ambrose's Kayla Crawford (1,232) and William Penn's Stephanie Adams (1,213) also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, the Lindenwood-Belleville women and Martin Methodist men squeaked by the competition for the win.
- At the Thomas N. Burris Memorial Kentucky Collegiate Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, the Lindenwood-Belleville men and Pikeville women finished the weekend with a victory.
