The 2023-2024 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season continued to ramp up last weekend, with three additional tournaments in the books and more teams officially starting their year.
In Rockford, Illinois (men), and Loves Park, Illinois (women), the Hammer Golden Eagle Invite took place, with 22 men’s varsity teams and 13 women’s varsity teams competing for the title.
After five individual games and 16 Baker games, the top eight men’s teams and top four women’s teams went to a bracket, where it was best of three for the first two rounds, and a best of five in the finals.
Marian-Wisconsin came out on top for the men’s division, while Calumet took home the title in the women’s division.
Marian-Wisconsin was the No. 4 seed in its bracket and knocked off No. 5 Rock Valley, No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 2 St. Ambrose to claim the win.
Garrett Meadows of Wisconsin-Whitewater led all bowlers in the men’s division with a 1,134 total, good for a 226.8 average, with Zach Greim of St. Ambrose right behind at 1,129 for second. Tanner Ausec of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1,085), Ryan Burton of Purdue (1,081) and Tyler Richter of Joliet Junior College (1,078) also took home all-tournament team honors.
In the women’s division, Calumet was the final team to get in the bracket and took care of business against No.1 Saint Xavier before beating No. 2 St. Ambrose in four games to win.
Madison Davenport of Rock Valley knocked down 1,088 pins, good for just over a 217 average, to lead the women’s division. Davenport was joined by Rachel Moore of Culver-Stockton (1,005), Erin Williams of St. Ambrose (970), Taylor Ellison of Governors State (953) and Barbara Lunsford of Saint Xavier (950) on the all-tournament team.
The Bulldog Bash took place in Louisville, Kentucky, with eight men’s varsity teams and five women’s varsity teams competing. The format included four individual games and 16 Baker games, and total pinfall determined the winner.
Midway took home the men’s title with a 7,006 total, while Bethel-Tennessee narrowly beat out Midway by seven pins (6,128-6,121) on the women’s side to take the title.
Caleb Marshall of Midway led all men with an 838 total, with Austin Hale of the University of the Cumberlands (808), Peyton Huskey of Lindsey Wilson (806), Tyler Stegemoller of Wright State (787) and Isiah Gordon of Midway (784) taking over the rest of the top five.
Teammates at Bethel-Tennessee, Chloe Amick (773) and Jenna Newton (750), took the top two spots for the women’s side, with Midway teammates Gracie Wyatt (717) and Maegan Coleman (705), along with University of Indianapolis’ Kelsey Torpy (680), rounding out the top five.
The final tournament of the weekend was in Flint, Michigan, as the Warrior Classic brought together 13 men’s varsity teams and 11 women’s varsity teams. The format was the same as the Bulldog Bash.
Lawrence Tech and Aquinas battled all day for the top spot on the men’s side, and Lawrence Tech came out on top by 76 pins (7,670-7,594).
Lawrence Tech had two players in the top five, with Jarin Kurashige leading all bowlers with a 929 total and Connor Nowak placing in fifth with an 891. Aquinas had two players in the top five as well, with Michael Deming finishing in second place with 917 and Dylan Vermilyea in fourth place with 901. Adan Newman of Michigan was third with 912.
Over on the women’s side, Rochester and Lawrence Tech also were battling it out, as Rochester had a great team set to start. Lawrence Tech mounted a strong comeback in Baker competition, though. Rochester would hold them off by 49 pins (6,231-6,182) to take the win.
Faith Harding of Bowling Green led the women’s field with a 790 total, with Brooke Kochel of Lawrence Tech right behind with 781. Rochester teammates Riley Brownrigg (775) and Nataleigh Eagle (760), along with Aquinas’ Morgan Jones (746), rounded out the top five.
Next weekend, the first Tier I tournament of the season is happening at the Midwest Collegiate Championships. The tournament will take place in the greater Milwaukee area and feature select pairs being livestreamed at BowlTV.com.
