The Morningside women and Waldorf men claimed victories at the Stout State Open in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, last weekend as part of a busy two-day stretch across the collegiate bowling landscape, which featured a total of 13 events across the country.
The format at the Stout State Open consisted of nine traditional games over two days, with the top three teams in the women’s division and top four teams in the men’s division, advancing to the match-play bracket. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches featured a best-of-three format, while the championship matches featured a best-of-five format.
The Morningside women entered match play as the top seed after edging Waldorf by 92 pins for the right to automatically be seeded into the championship match. After Waldorf defeated Wisconsin-Lacrosse in the semifinal match, 2-1, the Mustangs made school history by sweeping Waldorf, 3-0, in the championship match for the first tournament win in school history.
Morningside’s Emma Sonier topped the individual standings with a 1,672 nine-game total, an average of 185.78. It also was the first individual win in program history. Waldorf’s Jenna Haugen was second with 1,598, Morningside’s Brooke Bomgaars and Iowa State’s Caitlin Morris tied for third place with 1,584, and Waldorf’s Olivia Kubis (1,561) rounded out the top five.
The Waldorf men, the No. 2 seed, found themselves in a battle for the championship with top seeded Wisconsin-Madison. The match opened with two consecutive victories by Wisconsin-Madison, but Waldorf turned the tide by winning Games 3 and 4 to force a deciding Game 5. In the final stanza, Waldorf saved its best for last, winning the finale, 248-167, to earn the title.
In the semifinals, Waldorf defeated No. 4 Morningside, 2-1, while Morningside advanced to the semis by defeating No. 3 Minnesota State-Mankato in the quarterfinals, 2-1.
Minnesota State-Mankato’s Will Mateffy claimed top individual honors with a nine-game total of 1,881, an average of 209. Iowa State’s Jacob Gosse was second with 1,867 and was followed by Wisconsin-Madison’s Matt Cherney (1,852), Morningside’s Jorge Loredo (1,795) and Wisconsin-Stout’s Jordan Oppelt (1,749).

-At the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational in Kenner, Louisiana, Sam Houston State, the 2014 NCAA champion, overcame a 2-1 deficit in the best-of-seven championship match to defeat the ladies of Tulane, 4-2.
-At the West Michigan Laker Classic in Grandville, Michigan, Aquinas swept the men’s and women’s titles.
-At the Columbia 300 Western Shootout in Indianapolis, the St. Francis-Illinois women paced the field, while the Calumet men overcame a small deficit to claim the men’s title.
-At the Pennsylvania Classic in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the William Paterson men captured the title, while the Kutztown women took home the win.
-At the Andy B’s Baker Challenge in Springfield, Missouri, the Central Missouri women dominated to claim the title, while the Iowa Central Community College men emerged victorious.
-At the SWIBC III in Fort Worth, Texas, and SWIBC IV in Dallas, the Newman men’s and women’s teams took home the titles in each event.
-At the Hampton Roads Collegiate Bowling Invitational in Chesapeake, Virginia, the Morgan State women overcame a 28-pin qualifying-round deficit to win the title.
-At the Five Seasons Classic in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Mount Mercy men emerged from the No. 3 seed to defeat Wichita State, 2-1, to claim the title, while the top-seeded Wichita State women defeated Lindenwood, 2-1, for the crown.
-At the Sacred Heart Bowl For The Cure in Wallingford, Connecticut, Sacred Heart fired the highest team game (1,177) of the event en route to the title.
-At the SLOtown Showdown and SLO Rollers events in Santa Maria, California, the Arizona State men found their way into the winner’s circle on Saturday, while San Jose State climbed to the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
