The Newman women cruised to victory while the Grand View men needed all five games on the way to capturing titles at last weekend’s Mid-States Championships, the second Tier I event of the 2018-2019 collegiate bowling season.
The women’s event was held at West Acres Bowl in Wichita, Kansas, while the men’s competition was held 15 miles away at Northrock Lanes, which is also host to the 2018 U.S. Open. A total of 31 men’s varsity teams and 27 women’s varsity teams hit the lanes for one of the top Tier I events of the season.
The Mid-States Championships format included six traditional games and 20 Baker games to determine the eight bracket finalists in each division. Bracket matches were a best-of-five Baker format.
Newman, the No. 6 seed, lost just one game during three bracket-play matches, including 3-0 sweeps of Midland and Martin Methodist, before defeating crosstown rival and No. 3 seed Wichita State, 3-1, in the title match.
Newman, which finished 12th at the Midwest Collegiate Championships Tier I event to open the season, captured its first tournament victory of the 2018-2019 campaign.
To advance to the finals, the Shockers needed seven games to dispatch of No. 6 Central Missouri in the opening round of bracket play before sweeping No. 2 St. Ambrose in the semifinals. Newman and Wichita State were co-hosts of the event.
Individually, just two women averaged more than 200 during the six traditional games at West Acres Bowl, while one team placed two players in the top five. Hastings’ Samantha Laird captured led the way with a six-game total of 1,298, an average of 216.33.
Lindenwood’s Haley Cummings (1,285) and Serenity Quintero (1,169), both of whom helped Lindenwood capture the 2018 Intercollegiate Team Championship in April, finished second and fourth, respectively.
Newman’s Ashton Anderson (1,185) and St. Ambrose’s Kayla Crawford (1,165) rounded out the women’s all-tournament team.
On the men’s side, No. 3 Grand View needed all five games to defeat No. 5 Wichita State to claim the Tier I victory. Grand View advanced to the title match after sweeping No. 6 Nebraska in the opening match and No. 2 St. Ambrose in the semifinals.
The runner-up Shockers reached the title match by topping No. 8 Kansas Wesleyan 3-0 in the quarterfinals and then taking down fellow host and top-seed Newman, 3-1, in the semifinals.
UNLV’s Dallas Leong claimed the top individual spot at Northrock Lanes after posting a six-game score of 1,335, an average of 222.50. It was the first career collegiate win for Leong.
Hastings’ Blake Earnest was second with a 1,291 total with Grand View’s Sam Cantrell (1,289), Clarke’s Hunter Sanders (1,281) and Newman’s Jake Provenzano (1,263) rounding out the top five.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Columbia 300 Western Shootout in Indianapolis, the Robert Morris-Illinois men and Ancilla College women collected titles.
- At the NCAA Tulane Invitational in Harahan, Louisiana, the Louisiana Tech women defeated Stephen F. Austin, 4-3, to win the title.
- At the West Michigan Laker Classic in Grandville, Michigan, the Olivet men and Aquinas women led the way in total pinfall.
- At the Pennsylvania Classic in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Kutztown women and William Patterson men picked up victories.
- At the Mount Shootout at Sunshine Lanes in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, the St. Francis women topped the field by nearly 500 pins.
- At the Stout State Open in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the Winona State men and Wisconsin-Oshkosh women emerged victorious.
