The Morehead State men and Urbana University women each defeated the top-seeded teams in their respective divisions on the way to victories at the Orange and Black Classic over the weekend.
After five traditional team games and 16 Baker games at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Beavercreek, Ohio, Morehead earned the final spot in the eight-team bracket, more than 450 pins behind tournament leader, Calumet College of St. Joseph.
The two faced off in the opening round of best-of-five Baker matches, with Morehead prevailing, 3.5-1.5. The Eagles then topped Urbana (3-0) and Ohio State (3-1) to win the event.
On the women's side, Urbana entered the bracket in the No. 7 spot and downed Maryland Eastern Shore and Lindenwood to set up a championship meeting with tournament host and top-qualifier, Pikeville.
Urbana defeated the Bears, 3-2, to claim the title at Poelking Lanes South in Centerville, Ohio.
Pikeville's Christine Johnston and Lindenwood's Michael Coffey earned top individual honors, shooting 1,131 (a 226.2 average) and 1,094 (218.8), respectively, during the weekend's five traditional games.
The event featured 26 varsity men's teams and 19 junior varsity entries, along with 26 varsity and 12 junior varsity women's teams.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
-At the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference II event at Ozark Lanes in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Spring Hill College (Mobile, Alabama) dominated the field, winning both the men's and women's titles. West Texas A&M was the runner-up on both sides. The event featured a combination of traditional and Baker games.
-At the Pennsylvania Classic at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the William Paterson men (9,644) outdistanced The College of New Jersey (9,437) for the win.
- At the Wisconsin Collegiate Bowling Conference II event in Milwaukee, Whitewater outlasted Mankato for the title. Whitewater posted a 50-game total of 10,244, while Mankato finished with 10,073.
- At the Kutztown University Fall Baker Invite/Team Matches at Berks Lanes in Reading, Pennsylvania, St. Francis (Pa.) edged Long Island-Brooklyn for the victory, 10,262-10,239. Delaware State finished third with 9,982.
- At the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, an NCAA event at AMF All-Star Lanes in Kenner, Louisiana, Sam Houston defeated Arkansas State, 4-2, in the championship match. Nebraska finished third and Vanderbilt rounded out the top four.
