The Pikeville women and Notre Dame-Ohio men navigated their way through the match-play bracket to claim titles at the Orange and Black Classic last weekend.
Women's competition at the Orange and Black Classic was held at Poelking Lanes South in Centerville, Ohio, while the men laced up at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Beavercreek, Ohio. Teams in both divisions bowled five traditional games and 16 Baker games to determine the eight teams that would advance to bracket play.
Pikeville qualified sixth in the women's field and swept No. 4 Urbana in the best-of-five Baker finals, 3-0. Pikeville defeated No. 2 Lindenwood, 3-1, in the semifinals, while Urbana knocked off No. 8 Notre Dame-Ohio, 3-1.
Wright State's Tori Pappas was the only player to average more than 200 for the tournament's five traditional games on the women's side, and she took home the individual win with a 1,032 total, a 206.4 average. Lindenwood's Courtney Wooldridge and Wright State's Colleen Hines tied for second with 998, and Campbellsville's Kylah Martin (992) and Urbana's Patricia Bodey (990) also recorded top-five finishes.
The Notre Dame-Ohio men, who also qualified sixth, rattled off nine consecutive victories on their way to the win, including a 3-0 win in the championship match against No. 4 Urbana. Notre Dame-Ohio found itself down 2-0 in its opening match against No. 3 Lindenwood, but rallied to advance to the semifinals, 3-2, where the Falcons swept No. 2 Wright State. Urbana defeated top-seeded Morehead State in the semifinals, 3-2.
Urbana's Kyle Cook averaged 240 to pace the men's field, finishing with a five-game total of 1,200. Pikeville's Andrew Letscher took second place with 1,125, while Wright State's Clay Stutzman (1,081), Morehead State's Jacob Yazell (1,080) and Lindenwood's Michael Coffey (1,078) also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Blue Hen Open in Wilmington, Delaware, the New Jersey Institute of Technology men rallied in the championship round to edge West Virginia for the victory.
- At the Sandhills Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Newman women and Midland men each won their respective bracket as the top seed.
- At the Great Lakes Bowling Conference II in Racine, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin-Whitewater men rolled to a big win, while the Minnesota State-Mankato women made their move in Baker competition to secure the title.
- At the KU Bud Whitman Memorial in Reading, Pennsylvania, the Delaware State women coasted to nearly a 400-pin victory over the rest of the field.
