The St. Francis-Illinois women and Notre Dame-Ohio men were victorious last weekend at the Columbia 300 Western Shootout in Indianapolis.
The Western Shootout featured six traditional games and 16 Baker games with total pinfall determining the winner. A total of 25 varsity women's teams and 22 varsity men's teams competed at Western Bowl.
The St. Francis-Illinois women were steady throughout the weekend on their way to nearly a 200-pin win, finishing the event with an 8,804 total. St. Ambrose finished in second place with 8,609, and Robert Morris-Illinois took third with 8,450.
Rayissa Amon of Mount Aloysius recorded the highest six-game block on the women's side, posting a 1,256 total (209.33 average). Several competitors finished just shy of Amon's total, including St. Ambrose's Katie Maher (1,250), Alma's Emma Davis (1,248) and Bellarmine's Megan Szczepanski (1,242). Notre Dame-Ohio's Brittany Ferrara finished in fifth place with 1,223.
After getting out to a 370-pin lead Saturday, the Notre Dame-Ohio men held off a rally from defending Intercollegiate Team Championships winner McKendree to record a 31-pin victory with a 9,272 total. McKendree took second with 9,241, and Robert Morris-Illinois finished third with 9,005.
In the men's individual standings, three of the top five spots went to Notre Dame-Ohio, led by Chris Elizondo, who paced the field with a 1,386 total (231 average). Elizondo was followed by McKendree's Greg Young Jr. (1,327), Notre Dame-Ohio's Ryan Ashby (1,317) and Vinny Bellar (1,300) and Lindenwood-Belleville's Tim Heimann (1,295).
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Midstates Championships in Wichita, Kansas, the top-seeded Newman men and Sam Houston State women each rolled through the single-elimination bracket to capture wins.
- At the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference No. 1 in Westland, Michigan, the Lawrence Tech men and women each collected victories by less than 10 pins.
