The Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah men and Tennessee Southern women elevated their games during Baker competition last weekend to record wins at the Bowlero Southern Collegiate Classic in Marietta, Georgia.
Each team collected its first Tier I victory of the 2022-2023 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season. Select pairs from each hosting center (Bowlero Austell for the men’s division and Bowlero Marietta for the women’s division) were broadcast live at BowlTV.com.
The event featured 26 varsity teams on the men’s side, and 19 varsity squads in the women’s divisions. All teams bowled six traditional games Saturday and 24 Baker games Sunday, with total pinfall determining the winner in each division.
Sunday’s Baker games were broken into six four-game sets, and in the final set, teams were assigned their final pair based on their spot in the standings to add to the excitement.
In the men’s division, SCAD-Savannah started slow but quickly found its rhythm Saturday to build its lead on the field through the traditional block. After averaging just under 200 on Saturday, the Bees turned it up in Baker on Sunday and averaged more than 209 as a unit to create some distance from the competition.
SCAD-Savannah collected the win with a 10,995 total. Webber International moved up a spot to finish as the runner-up with 10,704, and Tennessee Southern finished third with 10,625.
In the men’s individual standings, Tennessee Southern’s Ian Fitzpatrick put together the top performance over six games, finishing with a 1,380 total for six games (230 average). He posted four games above 230.
Julian Salinas of SCAD-Savannah was second with 1,332. Pikeville’s Eli Mayberry (1,313), Webber International’s Nick Larsen (1,308) and Bryce Frantz of University of the Cumberlands (1,276) also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
The women’s division saw some movement at the top of the leaderboard Saturday, with Milligan taking the early advantage and SCAD-Savannah finishing the traditional block in the lead by 66 pins over Tennessee Southern.
Tennessee Southern quickly solidified itself as the team to beat Sunday, however, as the Firehawks posted the top Baker total by 125 pins and rolled to the win by 341 pins.
Tennessee Southern finished with a 10,008 total to take home the hardware at the Bowlero Southern Collegiate Classic, while SCAD-Savannah (9,667) and Webber International (9,564) followed in the standings.
Milligan’s Emily Cheesman started strong Saturday to claim the top spot in the women’s individual standings, finishing with a 1,301 total (216.8 average). Her first four games eclipsed 230.
Emmanuel’s Gillian Moore was the runner-up with 1,255, and Tennessee Southern’s Lindsay Brown was third with 1,239. Erika Taylor of University of the Cumberlands (1,180) and Trine’s Jenna Beatty (1,175) also finished with top-five performances.
In other collegiate action:
- At the Bobcat Baker Classic in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the Saint Vincent women went undefeated to claim the title. Saint Vincent also finished at the top of the men’s standings.
- At the Bronco Open in Hastings, Nebraska, the Hastings men made their move in Baker competition to record the victory. In the women’s division, Iowa Central CC retained the top spot to claim the win.
- At the Buckeye Baker Classic in Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio State women took over the lead in the final game to jump ahead of Notre Dame-Ohio by four pins. Wright State captured the men’s title over 36 Baker games.
- At the Bulldog Bash in Richmond, Kentucky, the Midway men and Kentucky Wesleyan women rolled to big wins.
- At the Medaille Brunswick Invite in Kenmore, New York, the Medaille women earned the home win with a 4-2 victory over Mercyhurst in the title match.
- At the Seahawks Invite in Staten Island, New York, the St. Francis-Pennsylvania women went 9-0 and led the way in total pinfall.
- At the Titan Invitational in Neenah, Wisconsin, the Marian-Wisconsin men rallied to win the final two games against Wisconsin-Madison to earn the bracket victory, 3-2. On the women’s side, Coe posted a 3-1 win over Carthage in the title match.
- At the Track Kat Klash in Houston, the North Carolina A&T women averaged 249 to sweep McKendree in the finals, 4-0.
- At the Virginia Union Invitational in Midlothian, Virginia, the Mount St. Mary’s women bounced back after dropping the first game to Coppin State in the title match, rolling to four consecutive wins to collect the victory.
- At the West Coast Collegiate Team Championships – Event 1 in Fresno, California, the Grand Canyon men cruised to the top spot by more than 400 pins.
- At the West Coast Collegiate Team Championships – Event 2 in Fresno, California, the Grand Canyon men completed the weekend sweep by making a run during the Baker block on the way to a 13-pin win over San Jose State.
- At the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference – Event 2 in Allen Park, Michigan, the Indiana Tech women rolled to a big win, while the Lawrence Tech men held on to claim the top spot.
