HOUSTON – Nebraska defeated Arkansas State in a thrilling championship match at the 2014 NCAA Kat Klash at Emerald Bowl in Houston on Sunday.
The Cornhuskers kicked off the championship tilt with eight consecutive strikes on their way to a 275-197 victory in the first match and were up 3-1 in the best-of-seven Baker finals entering the fifth game. Arkansas State fought off elimination with wins of 151-149 and 209-180 to force a seventh game for the title.
Nebraska started the finale with six strikes in the first seven frames and never looked back, capturing the crown with a 226-161 win.
The Cornhuskers defeated Stephen F. Austin (4-0) and Central Missouri (4-2) before meeting Arkansas State in the championship match. Arkansas State bested Central Missouri (4-3) in the opening round of bracket play to secure a spot in the final match.
A total of 18 teams made their way to Houston for the event, hosted by Sam Houston State. The tournament featured six Baker matches Friday and six traditional team-game matches Saturday to determine the seeding for Sunday's match-play bracket.

- The McKendree men defeated defending national champion Lindenwood 2-0 to win the 6th Annual Lion's Classic at St. Charles Lanes in St. Charles, Missouri. Lindenwood, which lost to Lindenwood-Belleville a round earlier, topped undefeated McKendree 2-1 to force an additional set. The Lindenwood women topped Newman to claim the ladies title.
- The Toledo men and Wright State women earned top honors at the Bowling Green State University Falcon Classic at Interstate Lanes in Rossford, Ohio. Toledo topped Michigan State by more than 300 pins, while Wright State bested the University of Northwestern Ohio.
Samantha Dudley set the pace for Northwestern Ohio with games of 276, 265 and 265 for an 806 series during the weekend's traditional games. She added 203 and 183 to grab top individual honors on the women's side with a 1,192 total, a 238.4 average. Toledo's Cory Zalesak led all men with a 230.6 average for five games.
- At the Virginia Union Invitational at Bowl America Southwest in Midlothian, Virginia, top-seeded Sacred Heart averaged 199.36 in two Baker matches and cruised to a win over Cheyney. Frankin Pierce finished third, while Felician rounded out the top four at the 12- team event.
- San Jose State University outdistanced Arizona State to win both the Floria Financial Services Open and Montclair Open.
