The Bowling Green State women's team and Toledo men's team coasted to victories this weekend at the AC Open in Adrian, Mich., after a strong showing in Baker competition.
The Bowling Green State women found themselves sitting in second behind Huntington after four traditional games, but ran away from the field during the 16 Baker games, averaging more than 192 on their way to the winning total of 6,828. Adrian finished second with 6,659, while Huntington took third with 6,542.
On the men's side, Toledo held a slight lead over Saginaw Valley State after four traditional games, but cruised to the title after their performance in Baker competition. The Rockets were the only team in the field to average more than 200 over the course of 16 Baker games (210.06) to finish with 7,216. Saginaw Valley State (6,841) held onto second, and Bowling Green State (6,773) ended up third.
Huntington's Shelby New rolled a four-game score of 856 to take the top individual spot on the women's side. Adrian's Kate Gladstone (826) finished second, while Bowling Green State teammates Brittney Poling (784) and Nikki Sims (780) took third and fourth, respectively. Toledo's Danielle Williams rounded out the top five with 771.
Griffin Sabelli of Oberlin led the way for the men with a four-game total of 868 to edge Toledo's Charles Easton, who finished with 859. Huntington's Connor Brown (843) and Seth Walker (840) earned third and fourth, respectively, while Toledo's Nick Stone (829) took fifth.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Hornet Classic in Montgomery, Ala., Sam Houston State bounced back from an earlier loss to Alabama State to defeat the Lady Hornets in the championship match, 4-3.
- At the UMES Hawk Classic in Millsboro, Del., Maryland Eastern Shore dispatched of Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0, to claim the title.
- At the CIAA Event #1, Bowie State cruised to a 12-0 record to lead the Northern division, while Fayetteville State paced the Southern division with a 13-0 mark.
- At the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference #2 in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Lawrence Tech men's team and Davenport women's team walked away victorious.
- At the BU Striking Knights Classic in Louisville, Ky., the Morehead men held off a late rally by Louisville to capture the title, while the Pikeville women won by a comfortable margin.
- At the Titan Invite in Oshkosh, Wis., the Robert Morris-Illinois men's and women's team led qualifying and worked their way unscathed through the bracket to take home the titles.
- At the Penn State Berks Invitational in Sinking Spring, Pa., the Kutztown women and Penn State Main men captured the top spots.
- At the Midland Classic in Omaha, Neb., the William Penn men's and women's team cruised to victory.
- At the Montclair Open, San Jose State captured Event 1, and Event 2 went to Fresno State.
