Collegiate Ticker - Nov. 2, 2022
November 02, 2022
The Five Seasons Classic tested collegiate teams with a mix of traditional, Baker and match-play competition last weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Mount Mercy women and St. Ambrose men were able to make their way to the top of the class and collect wins.
The women’s event was contested at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center while the field for the men’s division competed at May City Bowl. The women’s division featured 12 varsity teams, and the men’s side had 13 varsity programs.
The tournament featured five traditional games and five four-game Baker sets. Teams were matched up against a different opponent for each game and set and recorded either a win or loss based on total pinfall.
The final Baker set was a position round with seeding determined first on a team’s win-loss record. If teams shared the same record, total pinfall served as the tiebreaker. At the conclusion of the position round, a champion in each division was declared based on win-loss record for the weekend with ties being broken by total pinfall.
On the women’s side, Mount Mercy headed into the position round with a 7-2 mark and nearly a 600-pin lead over Grand View. Grand View held the No. 2 spot with a 6-3 record and the tiebreaker over Iowa Central CC.
Mount Mercy collected another win in the position round (767-698) to finish with an 8-2 record for the victory. The Mustangs finished with an 8,817 total.
Four teams finished with a 6-4 record, and St. Ambrose moved into second place to conclude the event with an 8,284 total. Peru State was third with 8,193, and Grand View was fourth with 8,149.
In the women’s individual standings, student-athletes from Mount Mercy also earned the top two spots. Megan Kolberg rolled games of 244, 227, 218, 225 and 257 to finish with a 1,171 total (234.2 average) to lead the field, and Jaelle Hamman posted 1,069 to finish in second place.
St. Ambrose’s Marissa Bills was third with 1,068 while Culver-Stockton’s Jasmine Saunders and Wartburg’s Trista Rauma finished tied for fourth with 1,011.
In the men’s division, three teams (St. Ambrose, Mount Mercy, Wartburg) held records of 7-2 going into the position round. St. Ambrose and Mount Mercy were ahead of Wartburg in total pinfall, meaning the Fighting Bees and Mustangs would face off in the final round.
St. Ambrose posted an 880-828 win over Mount Mercy to claim the title with an 8-2 record and total pinfall of 9,248 for the weekend.
Wartburg also finished at 8-2 and settled into second with 8,634. Mount Mercy was 7-3 (9,026 pinfall total) while Quincy (8,255) and Peru State (7,996) finished at 6-4.
