The Morehead State men and Urbana University women shared the winner's circle again last weekend in Ohio as they claimed the titles at the 2015 Roto Grip Raider Classic.
Morehead took control during the elimination rounds at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Beavercreek, Ohio, and outlasted Notre Dame College, 407-399, in the two-game Baker final.
The Eagles also set the pace in the four-game semifinal round with an 869 total, followed by Notre Dame (844), Pikeville (771) and Ohio State (745). Pikeville and Ohio State were eliminated, finishing third and fourth, respectively, at the 21-team event.
Qualifying at the Roto Grip Raider Classic included five traditional games and 20 Baker games, before the cut was made to the top four. Ohio State led both rounds and finished qualifying nearly 300 pins ahead of No. 2 Notre Dame.
The individual standings in the five traditional games were a little tighter as only four pins separated the top three places. Pikeville's Zachary Fylling led the way with a 1,114 total, a 222.8 average, followed by Ryan Ashby of Notre Dame (1,112) and Dylin Hunter of Adrian College (1,110).
On the women's side, held at nearby Capri Lanes in Kettering, Ohio, Urbana earned the final spot in the elimination portion of the event but capitalized on the opportunity.
The Blue Knights topped the four-team semifinals with an 825 total, just ahead of Wright State (822), Ursuline (809) and top-seed Pikeville (781) and then topped Wright State in the finale, 413-399. Ursuline and Pikeville finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 23-team field.
Ursuline's Rachael Albright was the top individual for the women with a five game total of 1,093, a 218.6 average, followed by Marian University's Taylor Davis and Katelynn George of Union College, who tied with 1,081.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the 15th Annual Leatherneck Classic, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men and St. Ambrose women hoisted the trophies.
The men's portion of the event was held at Highland Park Bowl in Moline, Illinois, where Whitewater topped Midland (2-1), William Penn (2-1) and Lindenwood (2-1) in the final eight-team bracket to earn the title.
On the women's side at Miller Time Bowling in Davenport, Iowa, St. Ambrose defeated Grand View (2-0), Wichita (2-0) and Midland (2-1) for the win.
- At the CIAA Event I in Charlotte, North Carolina, Fayetteville State cruised through team matches and Baker competition to win the South Division with an 11,169 pinfall total, while Virginia State claimed the North with 12,006.
- At the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Jamboree 2 at the Lenawee Recreation Bowling Center in Adrian, Michigan, the Concordia men and women swept the titles, each edging out Lawrence Tech.
- At the Spring Hill College Fall Tournament at AMF Camelia Lanes in Mobile, Alabama, Webber University picked up a pair of wins.
The Webber men dominated the field and won the event by 735 pins over Florida State, while the Webber women finished 59 pins ahead of the Florida State ladies.
- After six team games and 16 Baker games at the Penn State Classic at Northland Bowl in State College, Pennsylvania, Penn State-Berks outdistanced the Rochester Institute of Technology for the victory. Penn State (main) fielded the only team on the women's side.
Individually, Kurtis Stidd of Penn State-Berks topped the field with a six-game total of 1,290, a 215 average.
- At the West Coast Collegiate Team Championships, two events over two days, San Jose State and Arizona State picked up men's titles, while Fresno State was the only varsity team on the women's side.
In the first event, which included bonus pins, the San Jose men slipped past Arizona State, 7,748-7,707. On Day 2, Arizona State turned in a dominating performance and topped runner-up San Jose State by nearly 600 pins.
Individually, Arizona State's Nick Devlin finished ahead of San Jose's Michael Tang at both events, out averaging the reigning National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association MVP by nine and 19 pins, respectively.
- At the Northeast Conference Meet 1 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Sacred Heart finished 50 pins ahead of St. Francis (Pa.) for the win.
- At the Big Red Invitational at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska, Nebraska cruised to the victory topping Arkansas State by nearly 400 pins.
- At the MEAC Northern Division event at AMF Townson Lanes in Townson, Maryland, Delaware State held off Maryland Eastern Shore through four traditional games and four Baker sets to earn the victory.
- In the MEAC Southern Division tournament at Spartan Lanes in Norfolk, Virginia, defending Intercollegiate Team Championships winner North Carolina A&T topped the five-team field for the win, finishing more than 600 pins ahead of Norfolk State.
