The 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season rolled on last weekend as the Leatherneck Classic, one of the biggest Tier II events of the year, took place in Rockford, Illinois.
Forty men’s varsity teams and 30 women’s varsity teams laced up their bowling shoes for five individual games and 16 Baker games before the top eight teams in each division advanced to the best-of-three match-play bracket.
In the men’s division, Webber International qualified as the No. 1 seed with Wichita State, Mount Mercy, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Indiana Tech, Newman, Calumet and St. Ambrose also qualifying for match play as seeds two through eight, respectively.
By the championship match, Webber International and Wichita State were the last two teams remaining for the title. Wichita State started off with a 234 to open with a 1-0 lead, but Webber won Game 2 to send it to the deciding third game. In the end, the Shockers won with a 235 to Webber’s 172 for the Tier II victory.
Webber International’s Brandon Bohn led all men in individuals with a five-game total of 1,267, averaging over 253. Wichita State’s Spencer Robarge placed second (1,233) and Mount Mercy’s Keaton Ostrowski third (1,170). Newman’s Silas Limes (1,167) and St. Francis-Illinois’ Jacob Gunther (1,166) rounded out the top five. Wisconsin-Whitewater’s James Stewart and Mount Mercy’s Zach Andresen both achieved perfection in Game 4 of the individual block.
Over in the women’s division, Mount Mercy qualified as the top seed in the bracket. Joining the Mustangs were Concordia, Judson, William Penn, Governors State, Lindenwood, Saint Xavier and Newman as seeds two through eight, respectively.
Mount Mercy and Saint Xaiver made it to the title match with Saint Xaiver sweeping the Mustangs in two close games (172-162, 177-173) for their second tournament win of the season.
Nada Nawwaraah Abdul Jalil of Mount Mercy led all women in individuals with a five-game total of 1,092 while teammate Brooke Salzman was fifth with 1,036. Grand View’s Emilee Hall (1,055), Webber International’s Sara Miric (1,053) and Viterbo’s Emily Newbauer (1,044) held spots two through four, respectively.
In other collegiate action:
- At the Br. Pat Lacey Memorial Tournament in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the William Smith women led the pack after five individual games to win.
- At the Roto Grip Raider Classic in Beavercreek, Ohio, the Marian-Indiana men and women swept the event.
- At the SHU Halo Classic and AC Open in Adrian, Michigan, the Siena Heights men swept both events while the Jackson women won the Halo Classic, and the Siena Heights women took the victory in the AC Open.
- At the Spring Hill College Fall Classic I and II in Pensacola, Florida, the Florida State men won the first event and Emmanuel men won the second while the Emmanuel women swept both.
- At the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (SWIBC) Events 3 and 4 in Fort Worth, Texas, the Southern Nazarene men and Kansas Wesleyan women won Event 3 while the Drury men and Texas-San Antonio women took home Event 4 victories.
- At the Unicorn Classic in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, the Saint Vincent women won by over 150 pins.
- At the ISTAP Hornet Classic in Montgomery, Alabama, the Alabama A&M women defeated Alabama State in four games to win the event.
- At the SFW Ladyjack Classic in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the Jacksonville State women took down Maryville in six games for the title.
- At the Bowl for the Cure in East Haven, Connecticut, the Sacred Heart women went 9-0 to finish on top.
- At the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) Event 1 in Greensboro, North Carolina, the North Carolina A&T women finished undefeated to win the event.
