The Wichita State women and Calumet men made their runs through match play to win their respective brackets last weekend at the Lions Classic in St. Charles, Missouri.
The 2021 edition of the Lions Classic welcomed 11 varsity women's teams and 15 men's programs.
The women's division featured three traditional games and 16 Baker games to determine seeding for bracket play. All teams advanced to the bracket, with teams being divided into three four-team brackets. The winner of each best-of-three Baker sub-bracket advanced to the stepladder finals.
Seeding in the stepladder finals was determined by match-play average and featured a best-of-five Baker format to determine the champion.
In qualifying, Wichita State paced the women's division with a 5,573 total, while Oklahoma Christian was second with 5,233. Lindenwood was third with 5,174. Each of these schools advanced from their respective sub-brackets in match play to earn spots in the stepladder finals.
Wichita State earned the top seed after averaging 202.5 in match play, setting up an opening match of Oklahoma Christian against Lindenwood.
Oklahoma Christian defeated Lindenwood, 3-1, to advance to the championship match and found the early momentum against Wichita State, taking a 2-1 lead into Game 4. Wichita State found the right look down the stretch, however, posting wins of 233-160 and 254-168 to claim the victory, 3-2.
In the women's individual standings, Barton Community College's Angelina Leeper was the only player to average over 200 for the three-game set, posting a 607 total to lead the way. Lincoln's Jaylyn Linder (595), Wichita State's Madison Janack (582), Oklahoma Christian's Morgan Pelkie (570) and Wichita State's Sierra Ciesiolka (545) also finished in the top five.
The men's qualifying portion included six traditional games to determine the seeding for the bracket. The men's bracket featured four four-team sub-brackets. The winner of each sub-bracket advanced to the bracket semifinals, with the winners meeting in the championship round.
The sub-bracket format featured best-of-three Baker matches, while the semifinals and finals expanded to a best-of-five Baker format.
The top three teams from qualifying in the men's division were Calumet (6,159), Wichita State (6,136) and Oklahoma Christian (6,025). Lindenwood qualified fourth with 5,945, and each of the top four teams emerged from their sub-brackets to reach the semifinals.
Both Calumet and Wichita State rallied in their respective matches against Lindenwood and Oklahoma Christian, coming back from 2-1 deficits to win the deciding game and advance to the title match with 3-2 victories.
Wichita State claimed the opening game, 194-184, but Calumet collected the next two games to take a 2-1 advantage. The Crimson Wave left no doubt in Game 4, cruising to a 253-158 win to secure the title, 3-1.
Oklahoma Christian's Joshua Imhoff rolled a 300 game and captured the top spot in the men's individual standings, posting a 1,421 six-game total, a 236.8 average. Lincoln Memorial's Michael Rachal finished second with 1,382 and was followed by Lindenwood's Andrew Sacks (1,372), Oklahoma Christian's Larry Butler (1,352) and Calumet's Dylan Dobran (1,330).
In other collegiate action:
- At the East Coast Conference Championships in Mineola, New York, the Chestnut Hill women claimed the victory by 24 pins.
- At the Ohio Bowling Conference III in Columbus, Ohio, the Notre Dame-Ohio men and women swept the top spots.
- At the Kohawk Invite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Mount Mercy women and St. Ambrose men put together impressive wins.
- At the Spring Hill Fall Tournament I and II in Mobile, Alabama, the Emmanuel men and Webber International women finished at the top of the standings in the traditional block, while the Baker standings were topped by the Webber International men and Emmanuel women.
- At the American Heartland Bowling Association II in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Alma women and Bowling Green State men emerged victorious.
- At the Lynne Jordan Memorial in Louisville, Kentucky, the Marian-Indiana men and Martin Methodist women rolled to big wins.
- At the Thomas N. Burris Memorial in Louisville, Kentucky, the Pikeville women and University of the Cumberlands men finished the weekend with wins.
