The Wichita State women and Wisconsin-Whitewater men were victorious last weekend at the Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic, a Tier 1 event in the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season.
The event at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois, included 62 men's varsity teams and 54 women's varsity teams competing in five traditional games and 20 Baker games with total pinfall determining the winner in each division.
The Wichita State women found themselves in third place after Saturday's five-game block, but the Shockers averaged more than 195 in Baker competition to move to the top of the standings with a 8,778 total. Pikeville finished second with 8,615, while St. Francis-Illinois moved up to third place with 8,548.
Pikeville's Karlee Evans led the women's individual standings with a 1,082 five-game total, a 216.4 average. St. Francis-Illinois' Abigail Ragsdale finished second with 1,065, and Grand View's Makayla Ericksen took third with 1,059. William Penn's Bailey Palmer (1,039) and St. Ambrose's Kayla Crawford (1,031) rounded out the top five.
The Wisconsin-Whitewater men went back-and-forth with defending Intercollegiate Team Championships winner McKendree for the top spot, but the Warhawks prevailed in the final three Baker games to capture the win with a 9,153 total. McKendree finished second with 9,078, and Notre Dame-Ohio took third place with 8,991.
Urbana's Kyle Cook snuck past Notre Dame-Ohio's Vincent Bellar in the final game to earn the men's top individual honor by a single pin. Cook delivered a 235 game to get to 1,139, a 227.8 average, while Bellar finished with 1,138. Nebraska's James Rutledge (1,121), McKendree's Greg Young (1,085) and Notre Dame-Ohio's Ryan Ashby (1,079) also recorded top-five finishes.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Kutztown Invitational in Reading, Pennsylvania, the Vanderbilt women rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Delaware State in the bracket final, 4-3.
- At the Muskie Mash in Zanesville, Ohio, the Kent State men and Muskingum women recorded wins.
- At the Blue and Orange Classic in Wappingers Falls, New York, the Molloy women and Erie men rolled to victory.
- At the Westchester Invitational in Farmingdale, New York, the Suffolk men and women swept the top spots.
- At the Mountaineer Classic in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the Muskingum women and Lindsey Wilson men led the way.
