In a major event on the USBC Collegiate schedule, the Notre Dame-Ohio men took a very narrow victory, while the Wichita State women rolled to the title at the Kegel/ISPBA Midwest Collegiate Classic at Stardust Lanes in Addison, Ill.
Notre Dame-Ohio held off a late charge from Wichita State to win the men's title with a total of 9,566. Wichita State took second with 9,557, while Robert Morris-Illinois was third with 9,365.
The women's division had no drama as Wichita State rolled to a victory of more than 400 pins, finishing with 9,488. Grand View was second with 9,050, while Lindenwood took third with 8,740.
In the individual standings, Notre Dame-Ohio's Chris Via closed his nine-game total with a 278 game to take top honors with 2,111 (234.5 average). Jacob Wright of Purdue was second with 2,006 and Francois Lavoie of Wichita State took third with 2,002. A pair of Robert Morris-Illinois bowlers, Matt Gasn and Cameron Weier, took fourth and fifth, respectively, with 1,963 and 1,949.
On the women's side, Wichita State's Daria Kovalova had the top score with 2,097 (233 average) with Brittany Smith of Grand View coming in second with 2,026. Tannya Roumimper of Wichita State was third with 1,959, Emily Huddleston of Lindenwood was fourth with 1,945 and Elizabeth Kras of Grand View took fifth with 1,947.
The event featured 56 varsity men's teams and 53 varsity women's teams.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Frederick E. Underwood Classic in Laurel, Md., Fairleigh Dickinson took first place, while St. Francis-Brooklyn was second.
- At the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark., host Arkansas State defeated Sam Houston State, 4-0, to claim the title.
- At the SWIBC III and IV Tournaments in Plano, Texas, and Richardson, Texas, West Texas A&M swept the men's and women's titles by wide margins in both events.
- At the Devil's Duel 1 in Phoenix, Arizona State defeated San Jose State, 2-0, in the championship match. San Jose State came back to win the Devil's Duel 2 event.
- At the Hawk Invitational in Utica, N.Y., the Schenectady men and Erie women both rolled to the titles.
- At the Viking Classic in Wallingford, Conn., the Sacred Heart men and women picked up wins.
