The Wichita State women and Calumet men captured wins at the Kegel/Illinois State BPA Midwest Collegiate Classic, a Tier 1 event in the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season, in Addison, Illinois, this past weekend.
The Shockers were the only women's team to average more than 200 during Saturday's traditional five-game block at Stardust Bowl, and they coasted to their third consecutive victory at the event after 20 Baker games Sunday with a 9,067 total. Ursuline finished second with 8,794, while Mount Mercy was third with 8,738.
Hastings' Emily Eckhoff, the 2015 Intercollegiate Singles Championships winner, added another title to her collection as she paced the women's individual standings with a 1,079 total. Spalding's Taylor VanFleet took second with 1,065, and Wichita State's Sydney Brummett finished third with 1,061.
The Calumet men also found themselves at the top of the standings after Saturday's block, and they didn't give away any ground during Baker competition to record their fourth Tier 1 win of the 2015-16 season with a 9,284 total. Lindenwood was second with 9,226, and Urbana finished third with 9,210.
Morehead State's Zach Doty continued his dominance at Stardust Bowl, leading the men's individual field with a 1,193 total. Doty also won the 20-and-under division at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships at the 84-lane center.
A pair of past Junior Team USA members rounded out the top three of the men's individual standings as Lindenwood's Michael Coffey (1,148) and Robert Morris-Illinois' Ryan Zagar (1,129) finished second and third, respectively.
A total of 60 varsity men's teams and 51 varsity women's teams laced up at the 2016 Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas, McKendree defeated Sam Houston State in the championship round, 4-2, to secure the win.
- At the Frederick and Edwina Underwood Classic in Laurel, Maryland, Fairleigh Dickinson bested Howard to record the victory.
- At the SWIBC IV in Denton, Texas, and SWIBC V in Plano, Texas, the West Texas A&M men and women swept the top spots.
- At the Devils Duel No. 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona, Arizona State outlasted San Jose State in the finals, 2-1.
- At the Antelope Shoot Out in Scottsdale, Arizona, Arizona State paced the way for the win.
- At the Hawk Invitational in Utica, New York, Schenectady cruised to victories on both the men's and women's side.
- At the Viking Classic in Wallingford, Connecticut, the Sacred Heart women and Suffolk men finished at the top of the standings.
