The 2015-2016 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season kicked off its second half with wins by the Webber International men and Emmanuel women at the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Florida.
The Webber men cruised to the top seed for the bracket final at Capital Lanes this past weekend after leading qualifying by more than 400 pins and bested Florida State in the title match to secure the victory. Webber earned its spot in the finals by defeating Central Florida, while Florida State knocked off Spring Hill. Central Florida earned third place for the tournament after defeating Spring Hill in a roll-off.
Webber's Matt Russo, who recently earned a spot on Junior Team USA 2016 at the USBC Team USA Trials, averaged more than 250 for his six-game block to take home the individual win with a 1,501 total. Russo's teammate, Shane Holt, finished second with 1,431, and Ryan Hauck of Spring Hill took third with 1,412.
On the women's side, Webber led Emmanuel by nearly 300 pins after qualifying, but Emmanuel found the right combination in the championship match to earn the title. Emmanuel kicked off the semifinals with a win over Florida State, while Webber advanced by defeating Florida A&M. Florida State was victorious in the third-place roll-off against Florida A&M.
Webber's Verity Crawley led the way in the women's six-game block, averaging nearly 240 on the way to a 1,435 total. Florida State's Heather Duncan finished second with 1,354, and Webber's Taylor Bulthuis took third with 1,293.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference No. 4, the Indiana Tech women held off a late rally by Lawrence Tech to get the win, while the Concordia men made their move in the final Baker block to get past Lawrence Tech.
- At the Roto Grip Eagles Baker Challenge in Addison, Illinois, the Purdue men rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the best-of-five title match against McKendree to win the final two games and record the win, while the Grand View women swept Calumet, 3-0, to earn the victory.
- At the Storm Hoinke Bearcat Open in Cincinnati, the Lindenwood men and women swept the top spots in the standings.
