The Lawrence Tech men and Concordia women led the pack at this past weekend’s Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Greater Detroit Classic in Allen Park, Michigan.
A total of 12 men’s and 12 women’s varsity teams laced up their bowling shoes in the conference event, bowling four individual games and 16 Baker games, where total pinfall determined the winner.
Lawrence Tech got off to a fast start in Game 1 of individuals, shooting 1,234 as a team and never looking back as they maintained the lead throughout the entire tournament. The Blue Devils averaged over 211 in Bakers to win by nearly 300 pins.
Four of the top five places were held by Lawrence Tech, as Michael Weber led all men with games of 269, 234, 248 and 223 for a 974 total. Micah Grune (second at 958), Cayleb Carey (third at 945) and Noah Samuels (fifth at 943) joined Weber in the top five. Indiana Tech’s Brandon Haney placed fourth at 944. Carey also had the tournament’s highest game with a 290 in Game 1 of individuals.
On the women’s side of the field, Concordia also had a strong start to the tournament, but Indiana Tech was not far behind going into Bakers, as only 59 pins separated the teams. Concordia fell behind during the Baker portion of the event but stormed back to win the tournament over Indiana Tech by 127 pins.
Aquinas’ Kayla VanLinden led the women’s field with a four-game total of 888, with Mount Vernon Nazarene’s Hannah Vaughn finishing second (866), Concordia’s Gabriella VanHorn placing third (852) and Indiana Tech teammates Morgan Nunn (838) and Meagan Kennedy (829) taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
In other collegiate action:
- At the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Round Robin-Event 2 in North Brunswick, New Jersey, the Saint Vincent and William Smith women each posted a 9-1 record in Baker competition. Combined results from November’s AMCC Round Robin-Event 1 put them as the top two seeds in the AMCC Championships, taking place March 22-24.
- At the Great Lakes Bowling Conference (GLBC)-Event 4 in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin-Whitewater men and Marian-Wisconsin women made it through bracket play to leave with wins.
- At the Kohawk Invite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Mount Mercy men and women swept the field.
- At the McKendree Baker Challenge in Fairview Heights, Illinois, the McKendree men and Wichita State women left with wins.
- At the Muskie Mash in Coshocton, Ohio, the Muskingum men and women swept the tournament.
- At the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Southwest Open-Saturday event in Lawrenceville, Georgia, the Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah men and women ended the day at the top of the standings. SCAD-Savannah’s Julian Salinas also shot 300 in Game 3 of individuals.
- At the NAIA Southwest-Sunday event in Lawrenceville, Georgia, the Webber International men and women had a sweep of their own.
- At the NAIA West-Saturday event in Lawrence, Kansas, the William Penn men and women won their match-play brackets.
- At the NAIA West-Sunday event in Lawrence, Kansas, the Hastings men and Ottawa-Kansas women left with victories.
- At the Columbia 300 Saints Invite in Valley Park, Missouri, the McKendree women picked up a victory after winning the match-play bracket.
