The 2023-2024 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season inches closer to its end after the final Tier I event of the year, the Hoosier Classic, was held last weekend in Indianapolis at Western Bowl.
A total of 78 men’s teams and 66 women’s teams came into the building looking to grab momentum before sectional assignments are announced on Feb. 21. All teams bowled six individual games and 15 Baker games, before the top eight in each division bowled in a single-elimination bracket to determine the winners. The first two rounds of the bracket were best-of-three games, while the championship match was best of five.
Out of the gate in Game 1 of individuals for the men, Matthew Berg of Ottawa-Kansas fired off a 300 game and scores continued to stay high all day, as Mount Mercy led Day 1 and continued to lead after Bakers on Day 2, claiming the No. 1 seed for match play. Joining Mount Mercy in the bracket, in order of seeding, included Wichita State, Lawrence Tech, Trine, Marian-Indiana, Webber International, Oklahoma Christian and Ottawa-Kansas.
In the first round of match play, No. 8 Ottawa upset No. 1 Mount Mercy (2-1) and No. 2 Wichita State fell to No. 7 Oklahoma Christian (2-1), while No. 4 Trine and No. 3 Lawrence Tech moved on to the semifinals. Ottawa-Kansas and Lawrence Tech swept their matches in the semifinals to meet in the championship match, where Lawrence Tech prevailed 3-1.
Marian-Indiana’s Nolan Blessing led all men, averaging 241 with games of 206, 276, 236, 249, 299 and 180 for a 1,446 total. Oklahoma Christian’s C.J. Petrin (1,378), Lawrence Tech’s Costa Gastouniotis (1,374), Ottawa-Kansas’ Justin Weddige (1,352) and Mount Mercy’s Zach Andresen (1,347) collected all-tournament team honors along with Blessing.
On the women’s side, Pikeville and Wichita State had strong starts on Day 1, with Wichita State leading after the first day. Pikeville took the lead going into the match-play bracket while Wichita State held the No. 2 seed. Joining Pikeville and Wichita State in match play were Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah, Mount Mercy, Oklahoma Christian, Milligan, Webber International and Saint Xavier.
In the first round of match play, the top three seeds, Pikeville, Wichita State and SCAD-Savannah, all moved on to the semifinals, while No. 5 Oklahoma Christian upset No. 4 Mount Mercy (2-1) to move on. The semifinals saw Oklahoma Christian beat out Pikeville for a spot in the championship match, while Wichita State beat SCAD-Savannah. In the championship match, Wichita State won 3-1 over Pikeville to win its second consecutive Hoosier Classic.
Baker’s Kinsey Miller led the women’s field after averaging over 231 with games of 226, 216, 278, 279, 226 and 163 for a 1,388 total. Joining Miller in the top five for all-tournament honors were Mount Mercy’s Nada Nawwarah Abdul Jalil (1,356), Notre Dame-Ohio’s Hannah Klein (1,343), Wichita State’s Ashtyn Woods (1,327) and Oklahoma Christian’s Claire McDermott (1,321).
In other collegiate action:
- At the Brother Pat Lacey Memorial in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the Saint Vincent women went a perfect 5-0 in the tournament.
- At the Mount Shootout in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania, the Mount St. Mary’s women claimed the win over Niagara in a 4-0 sweep.
- At the Suffolk Tournament in West Babylon, New York, the Suffolk County CC men and Sacred Heart women each ran away with wins.
- At the Viterbo Invitational in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin-Stout men and Wisconsin-Madison women took home wins.
- At the Storm Flyer Classic in Lockport, Illinois, the Sam Houston State women beat out Nebraska to win the event.
