The Marian-Wisconsin men and Davenport women were able to hit the reset button and start fresh in the bracket at last weekend’s Brunswick Warhawk Open, collecting three wins on the way to victory in their respective divisions.
The event was held at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois, and featured 27 men’s varsity teams and 24 varsity squads in the women’s division.
Qualifying consisted of six traditional games and 16 Baker games to determine the eight teams advancing to the bracket. All rounds of bracket play featured best-of-three Baker contests to determine the champion.
In the men’s division, Mount Mercy led qualifying to claim the top seed for the bracket, finishing with a 9,591 total. St. Ambrose was second with 9,472, and Wisconsin-Whitewater was third with 9,393.
Marian-Wisconsin was the No. 6 seed after finishing with 9,188. St. Francis-Illinois earned the final spot in the men’s bracket with 8,979, narrowly topping Midland (8,968) and Calumet (8,954).
Marian-Wisconsin quickly went to work in match play, sweeping Wisconsin-Whitewater 2-0 (245-170, 211-143) in the first round. The Sabres battled No. 7 Saint Xavier in the semifinal, winning the match in Game 3 to take the 2-1 win (207-193, 132-203, 187-140) and advance to the championship round against St. Francis-Illinois.
The Fighting Saints made their way to the finals with sweeps of Mount Mercy (203-180, 224-194) and No. 4 Notre Dame-Ohio (214-198, 222-134).
The title match was defined by big games with the Sabres striking first, 244-191. St. Francis-Illinois forced the deciding game after posting a 276-166 win in Game 2, but Marian-Wisconsin was able to bounce back in Game 3, capturing the title with a 244-215 victory.
Saint Xavier’s Alex Acosta averaged more than 254 in his final four games to edge St. Ambrose’s Ryan Speer for the top individual spot in the men’s division, finishing with a 1,379 total (229.83 average).
After starting with games of 191 and 170, Acosta finished with 249, 257, 258 and 254 to collect his first win of the season and third top-five finish.
Speer took second with 1,375, and Mount Mercy’s Brett Lloyd was third with 1,346. Jaysen Spanbauer of Marian-Wisconsin was fourth with 1,337, and Saint Xavier’s Matt Devorsky earned the final spot on the all-tournament team with a 1,323 total.
Mount Mercy also finished as the top qualifier in the women’s division at the Warhawk Open, finishing with 8,659 to lead the field. William Penn was second with 8,581, and St. Francis-Illinois qualified third with 8,376.
Davenport was the final team to advance to the bracket, finishing with 8,226 to stay ahead of Marian-Wisconsin (8,197).
The Panthers pounced on the opportunity for extended play and swept top seed Mount Mercy 2-0 (203-180, 224-194) in the opening round. Davenport continued to strike in a big win over No. 5 Calumet, posting another 2-0 (214-111, 220-193) victory to earn their spot in the finals against William Penn.
William Penn advanced with wins over No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater (200-163, 173-168) and No. 6 Coe (201-190, 203-248, 157-150).
Davenport took the advantage with a 201-181 victory in Game 1, but William Penn responded in Game 2 to tie the match, 179-161. The finale featured a slower scoring pace, but Davenport was able to get the job done and take home the title, 166-149.
Davenport’s Kasey Eaton collected top individual honors over six games in the women’s division, finishing at the top of the leaderboard with a 1,284 total (214 average).
The win was the first of the season for Eaton and marked her fourth top-10 finish of the 2022-2023 campaign.
Bailey Delrose of St. Francis-Illinois finished as the runner-up with 1,275, and she was followed in the standings by William Penn’s Alexis Lake (1,227), Coe’s Whittney Morse (1,199) and Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Kelly Whipple (1,187).
In other collegiate action:
-At the American Heartland Bowling Association (AHBA) – Event 4 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Indiana Tech men recorded their first AHBA win of the season. In the women’s division, Alma collected its second AHBA title of the year after winning Event 2 in October.
-At the Mustang Invitational in Sioux City, Iowa, the Morningside women won the final two games against Wartburg to record the home win, 2-1. Hastings swept Iowa Western CC in the men’s title tilt to take home the bracket victory.
-At the Northeast Conference (NEC) – Event 2 in North Brunswick, New Jersey, the Fairleigh Dickinson women posted a perfect 7-0 record to lead the way. Duquesne toppled the most pins over the weekend, finishing at 5-2.
-At the Northeast Classic in Lodi, New Jersey, the Penn State-Berks men went undefeated in the bracket and defeated Rochester Institute of Technology in the finals, 3-0. In the women’s bracket, Molloy put together a 3-1 win over Bloomfield to earn the victory.
