With the end of the semester approaching, 10 collegiate bowling events were held across the country last weekend, highlighted by wins at the Ebonite Warhawk Open by the Robert Morris-Illinois women and Midland men.
The Warhawk Open was held at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois, and featured 24 women's and 24 men's varsity teams. Qualifying consisted of six traditional games and 16 Baker games to determine the eight teams in each division advancing to the bracket. Bracket play featured best-of-three Baker matches to determine the champions.
The Robert Morris-Illinois women earned the top seed in the bracket and rolled to the win, sweeping No. 2 Mount Mercy in the title match, 2-0. The Eagles earned their spot in the finals by eliminating defending champion St. Francis-Illinois, 2-1, while Mount Mercy defeated St. Ambrose, 2-1.
Midland's Candice Goldfinch finished Saturday's qualifying block with a 256 game to put an exclamation point on her individual victory, posting a 1,305 total, a 217.5 average. St. Francis-Illinois' Nicole Troha improved on a fifth-place finish at the 2016 event to place second with 1,243, and Wisconsin-Whitewater's Emma Kuhn (1,237), Mount Mercy's Cassidy Courey (1,232) and St. Ambrose's Kayla Crawford (1,221) also made the all-tournament team.
The Midland men came from the No. 6 seed to claim the title, defeating No. 5 St. Francis-Illinois in the championship round, 2-0. The Warriors knocked off No. 2 Davenport in the semifinals, 2-0, to advance, while St. Francis-Illinois defeated defending champion and top seed Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2-0.
Midland's Alec Karr rolled 249 in his final game to earn his spot at the top of the individual standings, finishing with a 1,348 total, a 224.67 average. St. Francis-Illinois' Michael Kicmal fired 276 in Game 6 to place second with 1,340, and Wisconsin-Whitewater's David Eggert (1,330), Robert Morris-Illinois' Kenny Ryan (1,321) and Wisconsin-Whitewater's Aaron Turner (1,317) recorded top-five finishes.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Wildcat Invitational in New Castle, Delaware, the Adelphi women bounced back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Kutztown in the title match, 4-2.
- At the Toledo Classic in Toledo, Ohio, the Wright State men and women claimed the top spots.
- At the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference No. 3 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Concordia men rolled to victory, while the Indiana Tech women narrowly edged the competition for the win.
- At the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Florida, the Webber International women and men recorded big wins.
- At the Morningside Mustang Invitational in Sioux City, Iowa, the Grand View men and women rolled through bracket play to take home the titles.
- At the Northeast Classic in Lodi, New Jersey, the Schenectady women and William Paterson men cruised to the top of the standings.
- At the MEAC North No. 2 in Millsboro, Delaware, the Delaware State women posted a 7-1 record to pace the field.
- At the MEAC South No. 2 in Tallahassee, Florida, the North Carolina A&T women record the highest pinfall total on their way to a 6-3 finish.
- At the Northeast Conference No. 1 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, the Sacred Heart women toppled the most pins to finish the weekend at 4-2.
