The month of November came to a close with a major event on the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate schedule as the Wichita State men and women swept the titles at the National Collegiate Team Match Games in Fairview Heights, Ill.
The Wichita State men narrowly edged Robert Morris-Illinois by 115 pins to pick up the victory. The Shockers finished with 11,890, while Robert Morris tallied 11,775. Urbana finished third with 11,674, McKendree took fourth with 11,601 and Lindenwood rounded out the top five with 11,444.
The top of the women's standings was even c loser as Wichita State slipped past Webber International by just 17 pins for the win. Wichita State ended with 11,215 with Webber totaling 11,198. Lindenwood took third with 10,998, Robert Morris-Illinois was fourth at 10,641 and Grand View finished fifth with 10,348.
McKendree's AJ Johnson dominated the men's individual standings with a six-game total of 1,511 (251.6 average) on games of 266, 290, 236, 287, 228 and 204. The next closest was Wichita State's Francois Lavoie, who finished with 1,419. Riley Smith of McKendree was third with 1,377, Cameron Weier of Robert Morris was fourth with 1,371 and Matt Gasn of Robert Morris was fifth with 1,343.
Alicia Hartley of Mount Mercy finished with top honors in the women's division with 1,274 (212.3 average). Alyssa Pierson of Lindenwood was second with 1,267, Dasha Kovalova of Wichita State was third with 1,262, Diana Zavjalova of Webber International finished fourth with 1,259 and Becca Czlapinski of St. Ambrose was fifth with 1,244.
A total of 32 men's varsity teams and 26 women's varsity teams competed in the event.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the past two weekends:
- At the Big Red Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., Central Missouri finished as the top squad with 13,425 and an overall record of 10-4.
- At the Hastings College Thanksgiving Invitational in Hastings, Neb., the title went to host Hastings College, which defeated Midland JV, 2-1, in the bracket final.
- At the Lion's Classic in St. Charles, Mo., the McKendree men and Lindenwood women made it through the bracket to take the titles.
- At the Big Red Invitational in Cortland, N.Y., the Erie CC women and Rochester Tech men finished on top.
