This time of year welcomes some of the biggest regular-season events of the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season, and a pair of Tier 1 tournaments from Las Vegas highlighted last week's action.
The Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational at the South Point Bowling Plaza included 36 men's varsity teams and 22 women's varsity teams, with the Wichita State men and St. Francis-Illinois women earning their first Tier 1 titles of the 2017-2018 season.
The Las Vegas Invitational featured nine traditional qualifying games to determine the 16 men's teams and eight women's teams advancing to the single-elimination bracket. Bracket matches included a best-of-five Baker format to determine the champions in each division.
The Wichita State men successfully defended their title at the Las Vegas Invitational, defeating Emmanuel in the championship match, 3-2. The Shockers, who qualified second overall, faced a 2-1 deficit before firing games of 257 and 279 to secure the victory.
Wichita State defeated Grand Canyon in the semifinals, 3-2, while Emmanuel, the No. 8 seed, swept Newman, 3-0, to advance to the final.
Wichita State's Wesley Low Jr. took home the men's individual title for the second consecutive year, averaging nearly 234 on his way to a nine-game total of 2,105. Webber International's Evan Baranecky was second with 2,066, while Midland's Donovan Thomas (2,041), Webber's Matt Russo (1,971) and Nevada-Las Vegas' Dallas Leong (1,952) also earned top-five finishes.
On the women's side, St. Francis-Illinois went back and forth against Calumet in the title match before claiming the deciding game, 214-184, to record the 3-2 victory.
The Fighting Saints qualified sixth for the bracket and rallied against Newman in the semifinals, 3-2, to move onto the title match, and Calumet, the No. 5 seed, knocked off defending champion and top seed Wichita State in the semifinals, 3-0.
Reigning National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Most Valuable Player Sydney Brummett of Wichita State claimed her third individual title of the season, topping the standings with a 1,882 total. Midland's Candice Goldfinch placed second with 1,847, and Webber's Caitlyn Johnson (1,825), Emmanuel's Danielle Lane (1,822) and Wichita State's Sierra Kanemoto (1,800) finished in the top five.
The teams moved across town for the Collegiate Shoot-Out at The Orleans, where the Wichita State women recorded their eighth consecutive victory at the event, and the Webber International men cruised to the top spot.
The Collegiate Shoot-Out featured six traditional games and 16 Baker games, with total pinfall, including bonus pins, determining the champions in each division.
The Wichita State women claimed their second Tier 1 title of the 2017-2018 season by posting a 11,774 total, finishing more than 300 pins ahead of runner-up Newman (11,430). Emmanuel (10,996), Calumet (10,766) and St. Francis-Illinois (10,424) rounded out the top five.
Wichita State's Kanemoto recorded her second top-five finish of the week as she claimed the top spot in the women's individual standings, posting a six-game mark of 1,388, a 231.3 average. Kanemoto's teammate Hollyann Johansen finished second with 1,348, while Newman's Leanne Vastbinder (1,317), Grand Canyon's Correen Lieber (1,303) and Emmanuel's Chelsea Lein (1,302) placed in the top five.
The Webber men rolled to a 535-pin victory to win their first Tier 1 of the season, finishing with a 12,163 total. Newman was second with 11,628, narrowly edging William Penn (11,609), Midland (11,581) and Wichita State (11,558).
Webber's Russo continued his hot hand in Las Vegas, rolling 1,462 for his six games to top the men's individual standings. Grand Canyon's Cameron Smith posted 1,419 to finish second, while Wichita State's Briley Haugh (1,404), Arizona State's Andrew Hall (1,402) and William Penn's Quincy Bruce (1,401) recorded top-five finishes.
The final Tier 1 events of 2017 are taking place in Allentown, Pennsylvania, as the Keystone Quaker Classic runs Dec. 27-28 and the Lehigh Valley Classic follows Dec. 29-30.
