Only one collegiate event took place last weekend as student-athletes prepared for finals and winter break, and the Indiana Tech women and men posted the top grade at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) – Event 3 in Allen Park, Michigan.
The tournament featured 11 varsity teams in the women’s division and 10 squads on the men’s side. The format included four traditional games and 16 Baker games with total pinfall determining the winner in each division.
After four traditional games in the women’s division, Indiana Tech was in fourth place but just 54 pins behind Madonna heading into the Baker games.
The Warriors quickly chipped away at the difference after a pair of 200 games to start the Baker block and were able to maintain the lead heading down the stretch, finishing with a 6,495 total to record their third consecutive WHAC victory of the season.
Concordia finished 26 pins behind Indiana Tech to take second with 6,469. Madonna was third with 6,451, and Lawrence Tech was fourth with 6,426.
Lawrence Tech’s Caroline Holowenko used the momentum of an opening 253 to finish at the top of the women’s individual standings with a four-game score of 821 (205.25 average). It was the first individual win of her collegiate career.
Indiana Tech’s Kylie Carney finished in second with 819 and was the only other student-athlete in the women’s division to average over 200 for all four games. Michigan-Dearborn’s Jasmine Carroll (796), Concordia’s Gabriella VanHorn (789) and Indiana Tech’s Alyssa Reisgies (787) also finished in the top five.
In the men’s division, Indiana Tech set the tone early after opening their traditional block with a 1,125 game. The Warriors built a 176-pin lead heading into the Baker games and were able to stay at the top of the standings to capture their first win in WHAC competition this season, finishing with a 7,194 total.
Lawrence Tech, the winner of the first two WHAC events of the season, finished second with 7,092. Concordia was third with 6,937, and Aquinas was fourth with 6,368.
A total of 15 pins separated the five student-athletes at the top of the men’s individual standings and featured three competitors from Lawrence Tech and two from Indiana Tech.
Lawrence Tech’s Noah Samuels captured his second consecutive individual win in WHAC competition with an 855 total (213.75 average), edging Indiana Tech’s Michael Harmon by five pins (850).
Jervon Webster of Lawrence Tech was third with 845, Indiana Tech’s Bobby Habetler was fourth with 844 and Lawrence Tech’s Seth Braum was fifth with 840.
Looking ahead for the rest of 2022, the traditional end-of-the-year Tier I events are on the schedule for Las Vegas and Pennsylvania starting Dec. 18.
The Las Vegas events will be held at the South Point Bowling Plaza and have select pairs featured on BowlTV.com. The Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational will be first, taking place Dec. 18-19. The Collegiate Shoot-Out will follow next at South Point from Dec. 20-21.
On the other side of the country, both the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic (Jordan Lanes in Whitehall, Pennsylvania) and Roto Grip Keystone Quaker Classic (Haja Rose Bowl in Allentown, Pennsylvania) will run from Dec. 19-22.
The women’s field will be at the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic on Dec. 19-20 and compete at the Keystone Quaker Classic on Dec. 21-22.
Competition in the men’s division will be flipped and start at the Keystone Quaker Classic on Dec. 19-20 before heading to Jordan Lanes for the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Classic on Dec. 21-22.
