The McKendree women and St. Ambrose men each collected their first Tier I victory of the 2021-2022 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season last weekend at the National Collegiate Team Match Games in Fairview Heights, Illinois.
The event was held at St. Clair Bowl and included six traditional games and 20 Baker games, with total pinfall determining the champion in each division. The tournament featured 13 women's varsity teams and 16 men's varsity programs.
In the women's division, McKendree began to find its rhythm during the final four traditional games Saturday, averaging more than 208 as a team to hold a 50-pin lead over St. Ambrose heading into Baker competition.
McKendree continued strong during the Baker block Sunday, averaging more than 216 as a team to roll to a 391-pin victory with a 10,366 total.
Mount Mercy moved into second place with 9,975, and Newman finished third with 9,800.
A pair of student-athletes from St. Ambrose earned top individual honors based on their six-game totals Saturday. Addy Nelson took home the top spot with a 1,309 total (218.16 average), and Megan Hess recorded her third top-five finish of the season with 1,277.
McKendree's Rhian Dobinson (1,276) and Hope Gramly (1,265) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Davenport's Kasey Eaton took fifth with 1,259.
On the men's side, Lawrence Tech and McKendree topped the standings after the first day in Fairview Heights, with St. Ambrose sitting 121 pins out of first in third place.
The Fighting Bees battled back during the Baker block to take the lead and secured the win by 24 pins over Lawrence Tech with a 10,481 total. Lawrence Tech finished with 10,457, and McKendree was third with 10,428.
Lawrence Tech's David Decruydt capitalized on a strong start to his traditional block, averaging 244 for his first four games, to edge St. Ambrose's William Jones for the top individual spot in the men's division with a 1,336 total (222.66 average). Jones finished two pins back with 1,334.
Huntington's Derek Leyba (1,319), Lawrence Tech's Michael Weber (1,318) and McKendree's Peyton Smith (1,316) rounded out the top five.
The National Collegiate Team Match Games was the only event held last weekend.
Competition across the country will continue starting Saturday, Dec. 4, with six events slated to take place.
