Clayton-Robinson rolls to singles lead at 2024 Women’s Championships

RENO, Nev. – Katie Clayton-Robinson of Tampa, Florida, was cool, calm and collected throughout her final six games at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships, and she was able to use the momentum she built to take the lead in Diamond Singles at the National Bowling Stadium.

She fired a fantastic overall series of 784 to best the previous leader by four pins. Genie Franklin of Frisco, Texas, had held the lead with 780.

In her first game of singles, Clayton-Robinson started with 10 strikes in a row for a 289 score, and she rolled 257 in Game 2. She followed up in Game 3 by rattling off a score of 238.

She entered the 10th frame of singles needing a double for a chance not only at the first 800 series of the 2024 USBC Women’s Championships, but also the lead in Diamond All-Events after sets of 754 in doubles and 646 in team.

A mark with good count would help her get to the top spot in Diamond Singles.

Clayton-Robinson left a nine count on her first delivery in the final frame, and she covered the spare. She rolled a strike on her fill ball to secure the singles lead and also take over second place in Diamond All-Events with 2,184.

Kayla Pashina of Otsego, Minnesota, leads Diamond All-Events at the NBS with 2,198.

The 754 in doubles for Clayton-Robinson also helped her join Amanda Flood of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, to take third place in Diamond Doubles with a 1,454 combined score. Flood had a 696 series.

Erin Czuprynski of New Lenox, Illinois, and Amber Thompson of Danville, Indiana, lead Diamond Doubles with 1,474.

Clayton-Robinson was very consistent throughout her doubles and singles run, averaging more than 256 for her final six games. She was thrilled to take the lead in Diamond Singles.

“I’m very excited,” Clayton-Robinson said. “You know you can’t control what everyone else is going to do, and I just tried to bowl great. Luckily, the pins fell the right way.”

She was also backed by and cheered on by friends, teammates and family members, making the experience even more special for her.

“It’s been great,” Clayton-Robinson said. “My wife and daughter were able to join me this time, so it was nice to be able to do this in front of them.”

Clayton-Robinson has been bowling for 35 years now, including 13 years at the Women’s Championships, and she has really enjoyed her time at the National Bowling Stadium over the years.

“It’s been wonderful bowling at the Stadium, and we have done a lot of fun kid things and have seen a lot of different parts of Reno during our trip,” Clayton-Robinson said.
