Carolina bowler has 831 series at Youth Open

ARLINGTON, Texas - Jonathan Lovett of Columbia, S.C., rolled an 831 series, the highest score in the history of the United States Bowling Congress Youth Open Championships, on Thursday at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights, Mich.
Lovett, 14, rolled games of 267, 275 and 289 during singles competition in the Under 15 Division. He took part in the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships earlier this week, just missing the cut to the Advancers squad, and said the experience probably help prepare him for the Youth Open.
"All the patterns were so hard (at the North Pointe Junior Gold) and the Open is a little easier so I guess you can bowl better on it," Lovett said. "It's pretty great, first time getting an 800."
Lovett, who bowled this season in the Saturday morning Youth Silver League at Century Lanes in Fort Jackson, S.C., said his previous career-best series was 709 in a city tournament about six months ago.
The 831 is just the second 800 series in USBC Youth Open Championships history, which started in 2007. Tristan Musick of Olathe, Kan., had an 803 series in singles at the 2011 tournament.
Currently, Lovett is second in all-events in the U15 Division with a nine-game total of 2,003. Jacob Nimitz of Loves Park, Ill., leads the division at 2,064.
Lovett had a 637 series in doubles, teaming with Junnell Calatrava for a 1,174 total that is tied for fifth. In team competition, Lovett had a 537 series and his SC All-Stars team is fifth with a 2,081 total.
The USBC Youth Open is a non-qualifying national tournament that is open to all USBC Youth members. Competitors bowl nine games total - three games each of singles, doubles and four-player team. The combined scores from those events is the all-events score. All scores are scratch.
