California team moves into second place at USBC Open Championships
May 24, 2010
RENO, Nev. - Jerry Toenyes of Rancho Murieta, Calif., and his teammates have bowled together for more than three decades, and the USBC Open Championships gives them the opportunity to shine as a team on bowling's biggest stage.
Although success at the Open Championships has eluded them in the past, this year's performance moved them into second place in Classified Team with a 2,793 total.
Toenyes rolled a 642 series and helped Rivercat Five of Rancho Murieta, Calif., to games of 945, 931 and 917 at the National Bowling Stadium on Sunday night. Southeast Paint of Price, Utah, leads with 2,808.
"This feels amazing," said Toenyes, who made his 28th Open Championships appearance. "We came here with no expectations at all. We are just a group of people who worked together and have come to enjoy the tournament and the various cities we have been to. We just have a good time bowling, and we enjoy each other's company."
Toenyes was very pleased with the team's effort because everyone contributed to the overall success. He was followed by Debra King (588), Sandy Wagner (539), Lynda Toenyes (525) and Omar Wagner (499).
"I think everyone feels really good right now," Toenyes said. "Everyone had at least one 200 game, which was great. I think, regardless of how we ended up, everyone is very pleased at the moment."
The teammates met while working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Sacramento, Calif., and have shared the lanes for more than 30 years. When the Open Championships began to allow women to compete, Toenyes quickly added his wife and their friends to the roster.
The opportunity to compete on a tough condition, along with the company of his friends, is what brings Toenyes back to the Open Championships.
"I like the way the tournament is run," Toenyes said. "We enjoy the fact that it's a tough shot. When you shoot a 200 here, you know you have done well. That is very pleasing on a condition like this."
To be eligible for the Classified Division, a team must have a combined average of 900 or less, 360 or less for doubles and 180 or less for singles and all-events.
Presenting sponsors for the 2010 USBC Open Championships are Circus Circus, Eldorado Hotel Casino and Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno, Nevada.
