Asbaty, Jones both second after three rounds at QubicaAMF World Cup

ARLINGTON, Texas - Team USA's Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., continued his chase of Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte, while Diandra Asbaty of Chicago moved into second place in the women's division at the 2011 QubicaAMF World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday.
Jones shot 1,246 for his five-game block at Northcliff Bowling Centre for a 3,701 total (246.7 average) after 15 games, but continues to trail Belmonte, who has posted a 3,755 total. Finland's Kimmo Lehtonen remained in third at 3,567, with South Africa's Francois Louw in fourth at 3,544.
"The lanes transitioned differently than they have the previous two days, but the scoring pace is still very high," Jones said. "I made two pretty good ball changes to bail out some games."
With a 1,166 total for her five games Saturday, Asbaty, the 2006 QubicaAMF World Cup champion, has a 3,422 total. She is averaging 228.1 through 15 games. Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic, the defending champion, continued her torrid pace to maintain her lead. Guerra's 3,721 total (a 248 average) leads Asbaty by 299 pins, with Cherie Tan of Singapore holding third at 3,417.
"We had a good day but struggled one game a little bit," said Asbaty, who had 179 in her second game. "There is still a lot of bowling left. I really feel like my big blocks are still to come."
More than 80 countries are being represented at this year's event. Participants will bowl their final five games of qualifying on Sunday (20 total games of qualifying over four days) before the field is cut to the top 24 men and top 24 women for eight additional games Monday.
The top eight men and top eight women after 28 games advance to the Round of 8 on Dec. 6, where the field will be paired down to the top three men and top three women for the stepladder finals Dec. 7.
