Arkansas State freshman, Concordia senior lead way as Intercollegiate Singles starts

DAYTON, Ohio – Arkansas State freshman Averi Brown paced the women’s field in qualifying while Alex Ouellette, a senior at Concordia, was the men’s top qualifier as the Intercollegiate Singles Championships kicked off Tuesday at Poelking Lanes South.
The 24 men and 24 women, who earned spots in the event through sectional qualifying, bowled six games of qualifying on Tuesday morning to determine the bracket for match play. The top eight qualifiers received a first-round bye while the remainder of the field started match play on Tuesday afternoon.
In the six-game qualifying round, Brown posted a 1,358 pinfall total (a 226 average), closing with games of 265 and 289. While she admitted she tends to get a little more nervous bowling one-on-one matches, Tuesday’s results provide a boost heading into match play.
“Being a freshman in college, and not really having any experience coming in, it’s definitely a big confidence booster,” Brown said of taking the top qualifying spot. “Now, I’ll look to just stay consistent and trust it like I did today.”
Brown will meet Bailey Delrose of Maryville when the second round of match play begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. (Eastern). Match play is single elimination and all bracket matches consist of three games, with total pinfall determining the winner.
Delrose won her opening match against Amanda Duplan of Grand View, 684-501, on Tuesday.
Other women to win their opening-round matches were Sarah Gill of Stephen F. Austin, Chloe Skurzynski of Maryland Eastern Shore, Vanderbilt’s Adel Wahner, Samantha Laird of Hastings, Leslie Campbell of Wright State, McKendree’s Breanna Clemmer and Aimee Sherman of Fairleigh Dickinson.
In the men’s division, Ouellette, who is making his first trip to the ISC, said being the top qualifier simply means “it just gets you to tomorrow.”
“In this tournament, there’s a lot of really good bowlers, so getting one less match makes it a little easier,” said Ouellette, who had a 277 game in posting a 1,404 pinfall total (234 average). “I going to try to make good shots tomorrow and see what happens.”
Ouellette will face Logan Williams of Robert Morris-Illinois on Wednesday morning. Williams posted a 675-506 victory against Michael Pruchnik of St. Francis-Illinois.
Also advancing on Tuesday was 2016 ISC champion Daniel Hanson of Robert Morris-Illinois, Tom Hankey Jr. of Webber International, Nathan Stubler of St. Ambrose, Midland’s Morgan Moore, Kurt Schall of SUNY-Stonybrook, Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Matt Hibbard, and Alex Acosta of St. Xavier.
