WICHITA, Kan. - Debbie Etheredge of Satsuma, Alabama, took advantage of a strong start to take the lead in Emerald Singles on Wednesday at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.
Making her 23rd tournament appearance, Etheredge started with games of 215 and 234 at Northrock Lanes before finishing with 167 for a 616 series. Her set was the first score of 600 or better in Emerald Singles in 2019 and helped her surpass Pamela Albrandt of Fort Morgan, Colorado, who previously led with 556.
The right-hander felt at home at the 48-lane center as she put herself in great position to take the lead.
"The lanes (at Northrock) were great," Etheredge said. "I was just more comfortable in the smaller venue than some of the bigger stadiums the tournament has been at."
Etheredge's dedication to the sport over the years helped her earn induction into the Mobile USBC Hall of Fame for meritorious service, and she competes regularly at Mobile's Skyline Lanes.
Her performance on the lanes this week also helped her into the Emerald All-Events lead with a 1,646 total, and she helped Satsuma's Road Runners No. 1 into second place in Emerald Team with 1,894. She was joined in the team effort by Kay Gardner, Alice Dickson and Cathy Gormandy.
On her way to the lead in all-events, Etheredge added sets of 565 in team and 465 in doubles.
"I come to the national tournament for fun," Etheredge said. "And I just hope we bowl well."
Bowlers in the Emerald Division have entering averages of 160-174.
