Results after Round 2 of qualifying
ROCKFORD, Ill. – After two rounds of qualifying at the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Bowlers Journal Rockford Open, Olivia Farwell of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, leads the field as the first cut is made at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, Illinois.
Farwell had a 12-game qualifying total of 2,649 on a challenging 45-foot oil condition that gave everyone, including Farwell, fits at times. For Farwell, however, she has grown her mental game over the last year to quickly move on from the bad games.
“I kept everything simple, as long as I did that and stayed in the present I could not miss,” said Farwell, who will advance to the third round of qualifying Saturday at 10 a.m. Eastern. “I would come into events putting too much pressure on myself and I’d look around seeing people striking a lot, so one of my goals this year was to keep my head as clear as possible.”
Joining Farwell in the top five are Singapore’s Bernice Lim (2,578), Canada’s Jade Côté (2,577), Malaysia’s Sin Li Jane (2,556) and Singapore’s New Hui Fen (2,552).
Maranda Pattison of Redwood Valley, California (2,539), Colombia’s Rocio Restrepo (2,527), Karsyn Lukosius of Freehold, New Jersey (2,527), Lindsay Boomershine of Brigham City, Utah (2,516), and Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio (2,516), round out the top 10. Brittany Smith of Adel, Iowa, and England’s Verity Crawley tied for the last two spots with 2,427 to advance.
Farwell has been roommates on the tour with Stephanie Zavala the past few seasons and their friendship can only be described as fun off the lanes, with Farwell always in Zavala’s corner and vice versa if one doesn’t advance.
“We have a great relationship and like to goof around, which helps me because I am not that serious of a person,” Farwell said. “When I’m not bowling, I like to have fun and she’s someone I can do that with. I think we push each other really well and I told her before the season that I’m coming for her, so we have that friendly competition that helps me.”
Zavala also advanced to the third round of qualifying, so that competitiveness will be on full display Saturday morning and possibly further in the day. Farwell hasn’t made a championship-round appearance since her rookie season in 2022, so while the end goal is to make it back there, she has to keep things steady in order to do so.
“I’m going to have the same game plan, keep things simple and not overthink, but I’m going to come in being me by bringing the energy and lock in right away,” said Farwell. “As long as I can do those things, I think I’ll find myself in the top 12 and top five after (the final round of qualifying).”
The top 25 bowlers will return at 10 a.m. Eastern on Saturday morning for an additional six-game qualifying block before the final cut to the top 12 for the fourth and final six-game block, which will start at 3 p.m. Eastern. The top five will head to the stepladder finals beginning at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Saturday evening.
All rounds of competition will be streamed live on BowlTV.
