Arkansas State finds redemption, wins 2019 Prairie View A&M Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas - After finishing in second place two of the last three years at the Prairie View A&M Invitational at the International Training and Research Center, Arkansas State was able to breakthrough for the victory Sunday at the 2019 edition of the event.
The Red Wolves bested top qualifier Vanderbilt, 4-2, in the best-of-seven championship round to claim the win at the ITRC and find redemption after dropping the title match to McKendree in 2018.
The bracket portion of the event was contested using the Baker format, and both teams struggled to find the right look on the left lane in the finals. Arkansas State and Vanderbilt exchanged wins on the right lane through the first five games, giving the Red Wolves a 3-2 advantage.
After games of 176 and 161 to start on the left lane, Arkansas State was able to make the correct moves and shut out the Commodores after a strike and nine count in the 10th frame from sophomore Leah Glazer, 223-216.
To advance to the title match, Arkansas State defeated McKendree, 4-1, while Vanderbilt swept Stephen F. Austin, 4-0.
McKendree was able to edge Stephen F. Austin in the third-place match, 4-3, after a slow start during its final round. The Bearcats were down 3-1 but rallied to force a deciding game. McKendree held onto the win after Stephen F. Austin opened in the 10th frame, 179-177.
All 12 teams in the field bowled five five-game Baker matches Friday, five traditional games Saturday and one additional game Sunday, before being seeded into three best-of-seven match-play brackets based on total pinfall.
The top four teams were placed in one bracket, all with a chance to win the tournament. Seeds No. 5 through No. 8 were in a second bracket, and seeds No. 9 through No. 12 were in a third bracket.
In addition to the trophy, teams were competing to improve their overall record for the season, which helps determine the teams that qualify for the 2019 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Bowling Championship being held in Cleveland from April 11-13.
Vanderbilt posted the top overall record for the weekend at the ITRC, finishing with a 10-3 mark. McKendree was 9-4, while Arkansas State, Sam Houston State and Tulane each finished 8-5.
Individually, Vanderbilt's Maria Bulanova paced the field for the six-game block, averaging more than 227 on the way to a 1,366 total. It marks the second consecutive year Bulanova, a junior, has made the all-tournament team at the Prairie View A&M Invitational.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Cayla Hicks finished second with 1,303, and McKendree's Breanna Clemmer (1,294), North Carolina A&T's Ericka Quesada (1,228) and Vanderbilt's Adel Wahner (1,226) also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
