After serving a stint with the Budweisers, Welu became captain of the Falstaffs and led them to national honors in USBC and BPAA team action. He also was a great individual performer, scoring back-to-back victories in the 1964-65 USBC Masters and winning the 1959 All-Star. At 6'4" and 230 pounds, he was proof that big men can be stars in bowling. For many years, he was the color commentator on PBA telecasts with broadcaster Chris Schenkel.
